Relationships between Chronic Diseases and Depression among Middle-aged and Elderly People in China: A Prospective Study from CHARLS
SummaryGiven the rapid increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases in aging populations, this prospective study including 17 707 adults aged ≥45 years from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study was used to estimate the associations between chronic disease, multimorbidity, and depression among middle-aged and elderly adults in China, and explore the mediating factors. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Centre f or Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) questionnaire. Twelve chronic physical conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cancer, chronic lung disease, l...

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes in Patients with ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and the Use of a Telemedicine App Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic at a Center in Beijing, China, from August 2019 to March 2020.
CONCLUSIONS Telemedicine reduced the delay time of STEMI patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The difference in short-term adverse clinical outcomes was not statistically significant between patients who used the app and those who did not. PMID: 32938901 [PubMed - in process]

Associations between Aquaglyceroporin Gene Polymorphisms and Risk of Stroke among Patients with Hypertension.
Conclusions: This study suggests that SNPs rs2989924 and rs3758269 are associated with the risk of stroke among patients with hypertension, while there were no statistically significant associations between rs2542743, rs57139208, and rs16939881 and the risk of stroke being observed. The Association of Stage 1 Hypertension Defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA Guideline with Stroke and Its Subtypes among Elderly Chinese.
Conclusion: Among adults aged ≥60 years in rural China, stage 1 hypertension defined by 2017 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association hypertension guideline was independently associated with the increased risk of all stroke and ischemic stroke, excluding hemorrhagic stroke. Characteristics of Cerebral Stroke in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
This article focuses on epidemiology features, risk factors, and pathogenesis of stroke in the TAR in an effort to generate a better understanding of the characteristics of stroke in this region. The special plateau-related factors such as its high elevation, limited oxygen, the high incidence of hypertension, smoking, and the unique dietary habits of the region are correlated with the high incidence of stroke. In addition to these factors, the pathogenesis of stroke in this high-altitude area is also unique. However, there is no established explanation for the unique occurrence and high incidence of stroke in the TAR. Our...

Prediction of Prolonged Length of Stay for Stroke Patients on Admission for Inpatient Rehabilitation Based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) Generic Set: A Study from 50 Centers in China.
CONCLUSIONS The risk prediction model for prolonged LOS in stroke patients in 50 rehabilitation centers in China, based on the ICF Generic Set, showed that the scores for the type of medical insurance and the performance of daily activities (ICF, d230) on admission were independent predictors of prolonged LOS. This prediction model may allow stakeholders to estimate the risk of prolonged LOS on admission quantitatively, facilitate the financial planning, treatment regimens during hospitalization, referral after discharge, and reimbursement. Incidence of Stroke and Mortality in Chinese Patients with Sleep-Breathing Disorders: A Clinical Population-Based (CPB) Study.
CONCLUSIONS Age, sex, and the other existing disease(s) of patients with sleep-breathing disorders may be associated with stroke event(s). Also, stroke event(s) and comorbidities may be associated with mortality in this Chinese population. PMID: 31884509 [PubMed - in process]

The Effects of Electroacupuncture in a Rat Model of Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Following Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Involves MicroRNA-223 and the PTEN Signaling Pathway.
CONCLUSIONS In a rat model of CIRI following MCAO, EA activated the NOTCH pathway, promoted the expression of miR-223, increased the number of NSCs, and reduced the expression of PTEN. PMID: 31883264 [PubMed - in process]

Overall and sex-specific associations between methylation of the ABCG1 and APOE genes and ischemic stroke or other atherosclerosis-related traits in a sibling study of Chinese population
Identifying subjects with a high risk of ischemic stroke is fundamental for prevention of the disease. Both genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to ischemic stroke, but the underlying epigenetic m...

Sex Differences in Presentation, Quality of Life, and Treatment in Chinese Atrial Fibrillation Patients: Insights from the China Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study.
CONCLUSIONS</strong> In Chinese AF patients, women were older and more symptomatic, and had worse QoL. Despite all these differences, women tended to receive less rhythm-control treatment in those aged <75 years. Oral anticoagulant was substantially underused in high stroke risk patients, regardless of sex. PMID: 31738742 [PubMed - in process]

Salvianolic Acids for Injection Combined with Conventional Treatment for Patients with Acute Cerebral Infarction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
CONCLUSIONS SAFI plus CT in the treatment of ACI can improve the total effective rate, neurological deficit, and ability to perform activities of daily living, and there is no serious adverse reaction. Based on the GRADE system, the evidence quality is low. More large-scale, well-designed, and high-quality RCTs are required to confirm the positive results. PMID: 31639122 [PubMed - in process]

The Effect of rTMS over the Different Targets on Language Recovery in Stroke Patients with Global Aphasia: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study.
Conclusions: Inhibitory rTMS targeting the right pIFG and pSTG can be an effective treatment for subacute stroke patients with global aphasia. The effect of rTMS may depend on the stimulation site. Low-frequency rTMS inhibited the right pSTG and significantly improved language recovery in terms of auditory comprehension and repetition, whereas LF-rTMS inhibited the right pIFG, leading to apparent changes in spontaneous speech and repetition.
