Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 7946: Explainable Risk Prediction of Post-Stroke Adverse Mental Outcomes Using Machine Learning Techniques in a Population of 1780 Patients
In this study, we aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model to predict the risk of PSAMO. We retrospectively studied 1780 patients with stroke who were divided into PSAMO vs. no PSAMO groups based on results of validated depression and anxiety questionnaires. The features collected included demographic and sociological data, quality of life scores, stroke-related information, medical and medication history, and comorbidities. Recursive feature elimination was used to select features to input in parallel to eight ML algorithms to train and test the model. Bayesian optimization was used for hyperparameter tuning. Shaple...

Predicting The Onset Of Diabetes-Related Complications After A Diabetes Diagnosis With Machine Learning Algorithms
The burden of Diabetes has been ranked as the eighth cause in the ranking of causes of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) all over the world [1,2], accounting for 2.8% of total DALYs and with an increase of more than 148% in 2019 as compared with the data obtained in 1990 [2]. Diabetes is one of the most significant factors increasing the risk of mortality, morbidity, and disability worldwide, and its economic burden demands new ways to curb diabetes healthcare expenditure [3]. Furthermore, people with diabetes are at greater risk of additionally suffering from cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack or stroke [4...

Trends in mental health inequalities for people with disability, Australia 2003 to 2020
CONCLUSION: This paper confirms that people with disability experience worse mental health than people without disability. We add to previous findings by demonstrating that disability-related inequalities in mental health have been sustained for a long period and are worsening in some subpopulations.PMID:37606227 | DOI:10.1177/00048674231193881

COVID-19 ’ s Impact on Heart Health Still Confounds Doctors
(ST. LOUIS) — Firefighter and paramedic Mike Camilleri once had no trouble hauling heavy gear up ladders. Now battling long COVID, he gingerly steps onto a treadmill to learn how his heart handles a simple walk. “This is, like, not a tough-guy test so don’t fake it,” warned Beth Hughes, a physical therapist at Washington University in St. Louis. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] Somehow, a mild case of COVID-19 set off a chain reaction that eventually left Camilleri with dangerous blood pressure spikes, a heartbeat that raced with slight exertion, and episodes of intense chest pain...

The Role of Progranulin (PGRN) in the Pathogenesis of Ischemic Stroke
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2023 Aug 10. doi: 10.1007/s10571-023-01396-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a life-threatening medical condition and is a leading cause of disability. Cerebral ischemia is characterized by a distinct inflammatory response starting with the production of various cytokines and other inflammation-related agents. Progranulin (PGRN), a multifunctional protein, is critical in diverse physiological reactions, such as cell proliferation, inflammation, wound healing, and nervous system development. A mature PGRN is anti-inflammatory, while granulin, its derivative, conversely induces pro-inflammatory c...

Innovations in Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation
Despite improvements in acute stroke management, many stroke survivors remain with substantial disability. Efforts to more effectively harness the brain ’s plasticity and capacity for recovery have been gradually providing a more robust array of evidence to help guide practitioners. At the same time, new treatments, such as cryoneurolysis, are being incorporated into the management of long-term sequelae of stroke. In this special issue focusing on stroke rehabilitation, contributors review our current understanding of mechanisms involved in motor recovery and motor learning following stroke.

Using bibliotherapy to rebuild identity for people with aphasia: A book club experience
CONCLUSION: The themes align positively with outcomes associated with the bibliotherapy process. Themes also integrate into a self-management model that promotes self-efficacy through education, support, awareness, problem solving and goal setting. Caveats included determining participant readiness to examine recovery issues and facilitator preparation. Aphasia book clubs surrounding psychosocial texts may help PwA reconstruct a positive post-stroke identity.PMID:37517172 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcomdis.2023.106363
