Thrombophilia risk is not increased in children after perinatal stroke
Perinatal stroke causes cerebral palsy and lifelong disability. Specific diseases are definable, but mechanisms are poorly understood. Evidence suggests possible associations between arterial perinatal stroke and prothrombotic disorders, but population-based, controlled, disease-specific studies are limited. Understanding thrombophilia in perinatal stroke informs pathogenesis models and clinical management. We conducted a population-based, prospective, case-control study to determine the association of specific perinatal stroke diseases with known thrombophilias. Children with idiopathic magnetic resonance imaging–cl...

C ‐reactive protein gene polymorphism predicts the risk of thromboembolic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation: a more than 10‐year prospective follow‐up study
ConclusionThe CRP triallelic polymorphism and the CRP level are associated with the risk of incident thromboembolic stroke in patients with AF.

Impact of pre-admission treatment with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants on stroke severity in patients with acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsWe report a positive impact of pre-admission NOAC on ischemic stroke severity, which is particularly remarkable in light of the increased prevalence of prior stroke and lower rates of thrombolysis in this patient population.

Routine surveillance of pelvic and lower extremity deep vein thrombosis in stroke patients with patent foramen ovale
AbstractPatent foramen ovale (PFO) is a potential conduit for paradoxical embolization to the systemic atrial circulation of a thrombus originating in the venous system. In a selected group of subjects, the prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was assessed. Subjects were identified if they underwent magnetic resonance venography (MRV) pelvis and lower extremity doppler (LE-VDU) for assessment of DVT with PFO. The primary outcome measure was to report the number of patients with paradoxical embolization as their suspected etiology of stroke due to the presence of DVT, which then will be considered as determined stroke. ...

Coagulation factor XII, XI, and VIII activity levels and secondary events after first ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In our study of mild to moderate ischemic stroke patients, high activity levels of FXI and FVIII but not FXII were associated with worse vascular outcomes in the three-year period after first ischemic stroke. PMID: 32935900 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The use of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in in acute ischemic stroke is associated with increased level of BDNF
This study was conducted on 47 patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke (during the first 4.5  h from stroke onset); 26 patients of them eligible for receiving rt-PA (patient group) and 21 patients having contraindications for treatment with rt-PA (control group). Neurological, radiological and laboratory assessment (including BDNF serum level) were done for both groups at stroke onset (bef ore receiving rt-PA) and at day 7. There was a statistically significant increase in BDNF serum level from day 1 to day 7 in rt-PA treated patients in comparison to control group (P-value˂ 0.001). Serum level of BDNF is signific...

Associations of Coagulation Factor X and XI with Incident Acute Coronary Syndrome and Stroke: A Nested Case-Control Study
CONCLUSION: FXI levels were associated with a greater risk of incident ischemic stroke but not hemorrhagic stroke or ACS. FX levels were not associated with incident ACS or stroke.PMID:34351069 | DOI:10.1111/jth.15486

Age at smoking initiation and smoking cessation influence the incidence of stroke in China: a 10-year follow-up study
In conclusion, we found that current smokers had a higher stroke risk than never smokers, and the risk increased with a younger age at smoking in itiation. Smoking cessation can reduce the risk for stroke, especially could benefit from cessation at a younger age.

Retinal vein and artery occlusions: a risk factor for stroke in atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsA history of retinal arterial or retinal venous occlusion is associated with an increased risk of stroke/TE/TIA in patients with atrial fibrillation. Thus, prior retinal vascular occlusion may be considered as a previous thromboembolic event when evaluating stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Cytoprotective-selective activated protein C therapy for ischaemic stroke.
Abstract Despite years of research and efforts to translate stroke research to clinical therapy, ischaemic stroke remains a major cause of death, disability, and diminished quality of life. Primary and secondary preventive measures combined with improved quality of care have made significant progress. However, no novel drug for ischaemic stroke therapy has been approved in the past decade. Numerous studies have shown beneficial effects of activated protein C (APC) in rodent stroke models. In addition to its natural anticoagulant functions, APC conveys multiple direct cytoprotective effects on many different cell t...

Edoxaban versus placebo, aspirin, or aspirin plus clopidogrel for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. An indirect comparison analysis.
In conclusion, edoxaban is likely to provide even better protection from stroke and ICH than placebo, aspirin alone, or aspirin plus clopidogrel in both clinical trial populations and unselected community populations. Both edoxaban doses would also bring a positive NCB compared to anti-platelet drugs or placebo/non-treatment based on 'real world' data. PMID: 26062437 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Adequacy of preadmission oral anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists and ischemic stroke severity and outcome in patients with atrial fibrillation
In conclusion, optimally anticoagulated patients with AF have more favorable functional outcome after stroke and a trend for less severe stroke whereas patients with subtherapeutic anticoagulation have similar stroke severity and outcome with those on no treatment.
