Is Prophylactic Anticoagulation for Deep Venous Thrombosis Common Practice After Intracerebral Hemorrhage? Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Less than 20% of patients with ICH receive anticoagulation for deep venous thrombosis in the United States. When used, the time to initiation is <2 days in less than half of the patients. Further study should focus on understanding variations in practice and emphasize guideline-driven care.

Intraluminal Thrombus, Intraplaque Hemorrhage, Plaque Thickness, and Current Smoking Optimally Predict Carotid Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— After excluding patients with noncarotid plaque stroke sources, optimal discrimination of carotid-source stroke was obtained with intraluminal thrombus, IPH, plaque thickness, and smoking history but not ulceration and stenosis.

Sensitivity and Specificity of the Hyperdense Artery Sign for Arterial Obstruction in Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— When present in acute ischemic stroke, HAS indicates a high likelihood of arterial obstruction, but its absence indicates only a 50/50 chance of normal arterial patency. Thin-slice CT improves sensitivity of HAS detection. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRCTN25765518. Unique identifier: ISRCTN25765518.

Influence of Arterial Occlusion on Outcome After Intravenous Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In this retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke, there was a trend for more favorable outcomes with IVT in the setting of initial arterial occlusion than in the setting of no/minimal obstruction. Before confirmation in randomized controlled studies, this information should not influence thrombolysis decisions, however.

Initial Body Temperature in Ischemic Stroke: Nonpotentiation of Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator Benefit and Inverse Association With Severity Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In patients with hyperacute stroke, higher presenting temperatures are associated with less severe neurological deficits and reduced final infarct volumes. Presenting temperature does not modify the benefit of tPA on 3-month favorable outcome.

Stroke and Major Bleeding Risk in Elderly Patients Aged >=75 Years With Atrial Fibrillation: The Loire Valley Atrial Fibrillation Project Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Elderly patients with AF have a higher risk of stroke and bleeding, but the benefits of VKA therapy for stroke/thromboembolism or mortality were present regardless of increasing age.

Symptomatic Carotid Atherosclerotic Disease: Correlations Between Plaque Composition and Ipsilateral Stroke Risk Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Features of the vulnerable carotid plaque, including plaque thrombus, low fibrous content, macrophage infiltration, and microvessel density, correlate with predicted stroke risk. This study provides a basis for plaque imaging studies focused on stroke risk stratification.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis in the Absence of Headache Brief Reports
Conclusions— Patients with cerebral venous thrombosis but without headache are a heterogeneous subgroup, in which older patients, men, and some associated conditions are over-represented. Patients without headache had a worse clinical outcome, but after adjustment for imbalances, headache was not an independent predictor of outcome.

Intraluminal Cell Transplantation Prevents Growth and Rupture in a Model of Rupture-Prone Saccular Aneurysms Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Lack of smooth muscle cells in the aneurysm wall promotes wall degradation, aneurysm growth and rupture, even if the aneurysm is occluded by luminal thrombus. Transplantation of smooth muscle cells into the luminal thrombus can reduce this degenerative remodeling.

Carotid-Bulb Atypical Fibromuscular Dysplasia in Young Afro-Caribbean Patients With Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— CaFMD could be a common condition in young Afro-Caribbeans with carotid-territory ischemic stroke. Recurrences were frequent under antiplatelet treatment, while surgical CaFMD removal seemed more effective.
