Neuroinflammation, Sleep, and Circadian Rhythms
Molecules involved in innate immunity affect sleep and circadian oscillators and vice versa. Sleep-inducing inflammatory molecules are activated by increased waking activity and pathogens. Pathologies that alter inflammatory molecules, such as traumatic brain injury, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke often are associated with disturbed sleep and electroencephalogram power spectra. Moreover, sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep disordered breathing, are associated with increased dysregulation of inflammatory processes. Inflammatory molecules in both the central nervous system and periphery can alter sleep. I...

Unilateral Poststroke Periodic Limb Movements: A Case Series
We report 2 patients with unilateral poststroke PLM with similar clinical pictures but different symptoms, therapy, and outcome. The first is a long-lasting unilateral PLM video case with chronic vascular lesions leading to insomnia even if with no urgence or any subjective symptoms as in RLS but well responding only to a definite RLS treatment. The second case is an acute, short-duration self-limiting PLM with positive brain MRI lesion imaging. Our cases suggest that unilateral poststroke PLM even if distinct in subjective and radiological features from secondary RLS can sometimes have a definite and effective dopaminergi...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 1754: Traditional East Asian Herbal Medicine for Post-Stroke Insomnia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Lim Post-stroke insomnia (PSI) is a highly prevalent complication after stroke. Current evidence of psychotropic drug use for PSI management is scarce and indicates harmful adverse events (AEs). Traditional East Asian herbal medicine is a widely used traditional remedy for insomnia. However, so far, no study has systematically reviewed the efficacy and safety of traditional east asian herbal medicine (HM) for PSI. Therefore, we perform meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of HM for PSI. After a comprehensive electronic search of 15 databases, we review the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of HM use...

A qualitative examination of the usability of a digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia program after stroke
CONCLUSION: Sleepio can be used by some people at the chronic stage of stroke. However, some barriers to completion were highlighted, and not all suggestions were deemed practical for everyone. We therefore suggest possible adaptations which may make the program more easily usable and engaging for survivors of stroke with varying impairments.PMID:35108134 | DOI:10.1080/02699052.2022.2034182

Circadian preference and stroke characteristics: A descriptive study
This study set out to explore this relationship by examining whether there was an association between circadian preference and stroke characteristics in a sample of stroke outpatients, considering the time of stroke onset, the topography of the stroke and the resulting disability. We also examined whether sleep complaints (snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea) were associated with circadian preferences (i.e., morning-, evening-, and intermediate-types). We also compared circadian preferences and comorbidities in this sample, matched by age and sex, with those of healthy controls who took part in an epidemiological study (EPISONO...

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulators: a review of past, present and future devices
This article reviewed the history and classification of taVNS devices.EXPERT OPINION: The correlation between the effectiveness and stimulation parameters from taVNS devices still remains unclear. There is a lack of standard or harmonization among different taVNS devices. Strategies, including further comparative research and establishment of standard, have been recommended in this article to promote the future development of taVNS devices.PMID:34937487 | DOI:10.1080/17434440.2022.2020095
