Impaired Activity of Ryanodine Receptors Contributes to Calcium Mishandling in Cardiomyocytes of Metabolic Syndrome Rats
Conclusion Principal findings of this work are that abnormal Ca2+ transient amplitude, contractile dysfunction; and impaired relaxation of MetS cardiomyocytes underlies intrinsic dysfunctional RyR2 and SERCA pump. Abnormal activity of RyRs was evidenced by its decreased ability to bind [3H]-ryanodine. Although the MetS condition does not modify RyR2 protein expression, its phosphorylation at Ser2814 is decreased, which impairs its capacity for activation during ECC. The dysfunctional RyRs, together with a decreased activity of SERCA pump due to decreased Thr17-PLN phosphorylation suggest a downregulation of CaMKII in MetS...

Rapid Identification of Novel Inhibitors of the Human Aquaporin‐1 Water Channel

Aquaporin (AQP) channels play critical roles in several normal physiological and pathological states involving rapid water transport and are therefore drug targets. A high‐throughput cell‐based screening on > 6000 small molecular weight compounds identified several AQP1 blockers. Compared to canonical mercurial compounds, water transport assay in vesicles (Figure) identified two groups of most active novel AQP1 inhibitors e.g. a sulfonamide (compound 2), which constitute attractive leads for developing small‐molecule functional modulators for human AQP1.

Abstract PR04: Functional mobility disparities in older African American women with cancer in a multisite lay navigation program in the Deep South
Conclusions: AA oncogeriatric females have a greater number of high risk diseases and functional mobility limitations that affect their health, compared to Caucasians. By identifying functional mobility limitations early, proactive interventions can be implemented, monitored, and adjusted to modify or resolve mobility problems that can lead to disability and health disparities in oncogeriatric females. Missed Opportunities for Appropriate Anticoagulation Among Emergency Department Patients With Uncomplicated Atrial Fibrillation or Flutter
Conclusion: In this cohort of ED patients with uncomplicated atrial fibrillation or flutter who were discharged without cardiology involvement, many were not appropriately anticoagulated before ED arrival, and more than half of such patients did not appear to have corrective measures initiated by the emergency physician. This may represent a potential opportunity to improve patient care and outcomes.
