Waiting more than 24 hours for hip fracture surgery is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes for sicker patients: a nationwide cohort study of 63,998 patients using the Swedish Hip Fracture Register
CONCLUSION: The associations between waiting > 24 hours for hip fracture surgery and AF, CHF, and acute ischemia suggest that shorter waiting time may reduce adverse outcomes for the sicker patients.PMID:36847752 | PMC:PMC9972166 | DOI:10.2340/17453674.2023.9595

Cardiovascular disease risk in paediatric and young adult non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Conclusion Compared with matched population controls, children and young adults with biopsy-proven NAFLD had significantly higher rates of incident MACE, including ischaemic heart disease and congestive heart failure. Research to better characterise cardiovascular risk in children and young adults with NAFLD should be prioritised.

Proton Pump Inhibitor and Clopidogrel Use After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Risk of Major Cardiovascular Events
ConclusionsIn patients who receive clopidogrel after PCI, concomitant use of PPI seems to increase the risk of major cardiovascular events.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and incident major adverse cardiovascular events: results from a nationwide histology cohort
Conclusion Compared with matched population controls, patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD had significantly higher incidence of MACE, including IHD, stroke, CHF and CV mortality. Excess risk was evident across all stages of NAFLD and increased with worsening disease severity.

Incident cardiovascular disease and long-term exposure to source-specific air pollutants in a Swedish cohort
CONCLUSION: In an area with low to moderate air pollution exposure, we observed significant associations of long-term residential NOx with increased risk of incident CHF and fatal MI, but not with coronary events and stroke.PMID:35074356 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2022.112698

Risk factors for severe bleeding events during warfarin treatment: the influence of sex, age, comorbidity and co-medication
ConclusionMost of the well-established risk factors were found to be significantly associated with bleeding events in our study. We additionally found that women had a lower incidence of bleeding. Potential biases are selection effects, residual confounding and unmeasured frailty.

Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and in Patients Starting Empagliflozin Treatment: Nationwide Survey
ConclusionThe prevalence of CVD in patients with type 2 diabetes in clinical practice in Sweden was 28.3% during the study period, and it was 11.5% in the patients starting empagliflozin treatment. Patients of the latter cohort were, however, younger, more obese, and more likely to have unsatisfactory glycemic control, requiring additional treatment. Overall, a large proportion of type 2 diabetes patients should be considered at high cardiovascular risk.FundingBoehringer Ingelheim AB, Sweden.

Atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing coronary artery surgery is associated with adverse outcome.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 1 in 3 patients undergoing CABG had pre- or postoperative AF. Patients with pre- or postoperative AF were at higher risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and congestive heart failure, but not of myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. Postoperative AF was associated with higher risk of recurrent AF. PMID: 30265179 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of Variation in Published Stroke Rates on the Net Clinical Benefit of Anticoagulation for Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusion: Variation in published AF stroke rates for patients not receiving anticoagulant therapy results in multifold variation in the net clinical benefit of anticoagulation. Guidelines should better reflect the uncertainty in current thresholds of stroke risk score for recommending anticoagulation. Primary Funding Source: None. The association between relevant comorbidities and dementia in patients with atrial fibrillation
AbstractRisk of dementia is increased in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to  study associations between relevant comorbidities and prevalent as well as incident dementia in AF patients. Study population included all adults (n = 12,283) ≥ 45 years diagnosed with AF at 75 primary care centers in Sweden 2001–2007. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for associations between comorbidities and prevalent dementia. In a subsample (n = 12,096), (excluding patients with dementia diagnosed before AF onset), Cox regression was used to esti...

Long-Term Risk of Ischemic Stroke After the Cox-Maze III Procedure for Atrial Fibrillation
Conclusions This multicenter study showed a low incidence of perioperative and long-term postoperative ischemic stroke/TIA after CM-III. Although general risk of ischemic stroke/TIA was reduced, patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score 2 or greater had a higher risk compared with score 0 or 1. Complete left atrial appendage excision may be an important reason for the low ischemic stroke rate.
