Ultrasonographic measurements of the metacarpal and talar cartilage thicknesses in hemiplegic patients after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: We may conclude that metacarpal (but not talar) cartilage is thinner on the paretic side of stroke patients that seems to be less with better motor functioning. PMID: 27159891 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions—CEST is safe among unselected ischemic stroke patients with or without a visible occlusion on computed tomography angiography and with varying grades of clinical severity. Stroke Risk Factors, Subtypes, and 30-Day Case Fatality in Abuja, Nigeria (P1.121)
CONCLUSIONS: Although hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation were important stroke risk factors, in many patients, these were detected only after a stroke. While the commonest stroke subtype was cerebral infarction, observed in almost two-third of patients, SAH was associated with the highest case-fatality rate at 30 days of 44.4%. Combined lysis of thrombus with ultrasound and systemic tissue plasminogen activator for emergent revascularization in acute ischemic stroke (CLOTBUST‐ER): design and methodology of a multinational phase 3 trial
ConclusionsSince intravenous recombinant tissue‐plasminogen‐activator remains the only medical therapy to reverse ischemic stroke applicable in the emergency department, our trial will determine if the additional use of transcranial ultrasound improves functional outcomes in patients with severe acute ischemic stroke (NCT#01098981).

Vitreous Hemorrhage as a Complication of IV-tPA Therapy in a Patient with Acute Stroke (P4.227)
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first case report of vitreous hemorrhage following acute stroke therapy with IV-tPA. This underscores the risk of intraocular hemorrhage in patients with retinal neovascularization that could occur with other retinal vascular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy. Conclusions—Sickle mice are sensitive to hypoxia/ischemia-induced cerebral infarct but benefit from thrombolytic treatment. An increased resistive index in carotid arteries may be an early marker of sickle cell vasculopathy.

Failed Removal of Indwelling Urinary Catheters in Acute Stroke Patients: Incidence and Risk Factors
Conclusions This single site study identified a high incidence of failed urinary catheter removal in stroke patients, along with factors associated with failed removal. This is the first step in developing a predictive model that could reduce the incidence of this adverse event. Policies, penalties and protocols designed to reduce catheter days must be sensitive to the special situations where IUCs are medically necessary and equal consideration given to identifying the patients for which catheter removal poses a greater risk than continued catheter use.

Duplex Sonographic Diagnosis of Perinatal Hemorrhagic Stroke.
Abstract Children are particularly at risk for stroke in the neonatal period. Neonatal hemorrhagic stroke is rarer than ischemic stroke. The incidence is 40.7/100 000 live births. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a disruption in venous drainage usually due to local thrombosis. As a result of the nonspecific clinical symptoms in this age group, diagnosis is usually made too late. The only relatively specific symptom is a cerebral seizure during the first week of life.
