Relationship Between Dietary Vitamin D and Deaths From Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease Brief Report
Background and Purpose—There is growing evidence about the importance of vitamin D for cardiovascular health. Therefore, we examined the relationship between dietary vitamin D intake and risk of mortality from stroke and coronary heart disease in Japanese population. Methods—A prospective study encompassing 58 646 healthy Japanese adults (23 099 men and 35 547 women) aged of 40 to 79 years in whom dietary vitamin D intake was determined via a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. The median follow-up period was 19.3 years (1989–2009). The hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals of mortality were calcu...

Anxiety After Stroke Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—Anxiety after stroke is common and disabling. Stroke trialists have treated anxiety as a homogenous condition, and intervention studies have followed suit, neglecting the different treatment approaches for phobic and generalized anxiety. Using diagnostic psychiatric interviews, we aimed to report the frequency of phobic and generalized anxiety, phobic avoidance, predictors of anxiety, and patient outcomes at 3 months poststroke/transient ischemic attack. Methods—We followed prospectively a cohort of new diagnosis of stroke/transient ischemic attack at 3 months with a telephone semistructured psych...

Primary Results of the Multicenter ARISE II Study (Analysis of Revascularization in Ischemic Stroke With EmboTrap) Major Clinical Trials
Background and Purpose—EmboTrap is a novel stent retriever designed to achieve rapid and substantial flow restoration in acute ischemic stroke secondary to large-vessel occlusions. Here, we evaluated EmboTrap’s safety and efficacy compared with established stent retrievers. Methods—ARISE II (Analysis of Revascularization in Ischemic Stroke With EmboTrap) was a single-arm, prospective, multicenter study, comparing the EmboTrap device to a composite performance goal criterion derived using a Bayesian meta-analysis from the pivotal SWIFT (Solitaire device) and TREVO 2 (Trevo device) trials. Patients at 11 US and 8 Europe...

Early Cerebral Vein After Endovascular Ischemic Stroke Treatment Predicts Symptomatic Reperfusion Hemorrhage Brief Report
Conclusions—ECV on postendovascular mechanical thrombectomy digital subtraction angiography is highly diagnostic of subsequent symptomatic reperfusion hemorrhage in this data set. This finding has important implications for post-treatment management of blood pressure and anticoagulation.

Induction of Cooling With a Passive Head and Neck Cooling Device: Effects on Brain Temperature After Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Although the decrease of brain temperature after Sovika cooling device application was statistically significant, we doubt clinical relevance of this rather limited effect (–0.36°C). Moreover, the transient increases of blood pressure and ICP warrant caution.

Can DWI-ASPECTS Substitute for Lesion Volume in Acute Stroke? Brief Reports
Conclusions— Although each DWI-ASPECTS point corresponds to a wide range of volumes, DWI-ASPECTS <4 or ≥7 may be used as reliable surrogates of VolDWI >100 or <70 mL, respectively.

Evaluation of a Telephone Advice System for Remote Intravenous Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke: Data From a United Kingdom Network Brief Reports
Conclusion— Telephone advice and teleradiology, within an organized system of care, can be an effective method of delivery of intravenous thrombolysis.

Microbleed Status and 3-Month Outcome After Intravenous Thrombolysis in 717 Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Poor outcome or sICH was not associated with CMB presence or burden on pre–intravenous thrombolysis magnetic resonance imaging after adjustment for confounding factors. An individual patient data meta-analysis is needed to determine whether a subgroup of patients with CMBs carries an independent risk of poor outcome that might outweigh the expected benefit of intravenous thrombolysis.

Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Setting of Anticoagulation Brief Reports
Conclusions— Intra-arterial therapy seems to be safe in patients taking OACs; however, our study showed a nonsignificant increase in hemorrhage and mortality with a nonsignificant decrease in good outcomes in comparison with non-OAC patients. Although these nominal differences may have been related to older age and more comorbidities in the OAC group, larger studies are needed to confirm our findings given our limited sample size.

Association Between Serum Phosphate Levels and Stroke Risk in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: The Q-Cohort Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Higher serum phosphate levels were associated with an increased risk of brain hemorrhage, whereas low levels were associated with an increased risk of brain infarction in hemodialysis patients. These results suggest the importance of managing serum phosphate levels within an appropriate range in hemodialysis patients. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.umin.ac.jp/. Use and Outcomes of Intravenous Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Patients >=90 Years of Age Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The use of intravenous tPA among those aged ≥90 years is lower than in younger patients. When fibrinolytic therapy is used, the risk of symptomatic hemorrhage is not higher than in 66- to 89-year olds; however, mortality is higher and functional outcomes are lower.

Microbleeds, Cerebral Hemorrhage, and Functional Outcome After Stroke Thrombolysis Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—We assessed whether the presence, number, and distribution of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) on pre-intravenous thrombolysis MRI scans of acute ischemic stroke patients are associated with an increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or poor functional outcome. Methods—We performed an individual patient data meta-analysis, including prospective and retrospective studies of acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator. Using multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression, we investigated associations of pre-treatment CMB presence, burden (1, 2–4, ≥5, and>10...
