Smoking-Thrombolysis Relationship Depends on Ischemic Stroke Subtype Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, smoking could be related to a better chance of functional independence if their subtype of stroke was noncardioembolic, and a lower risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and mortality in those with large artery atherosclerosis.

Blood Pressure-Lowering Treatment With Candesartan in Patients With Acute Hemorrhagic Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— There was no evidence that blood pressure–lowering treatment with candesartan is beneficial during the first week of hemorrhagic stroke. Instead, there were signs that such treatment may be harmful, but this needs to be verified in larger studies. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00120003.

Psychosocial Distress and Stroke Risk in Older Adults Original Contributions
Conclusions— Increasing levels of psychosocial distress are related to excess risk of both fatal and nonfatal stroke in older black and white adults. Additional research is needed to examine pathways linking psychosocial distress to cerebrovascular disease risk.

Symptomatic Intracranial Hemorrhage After Stroke Thrombolysis: Comparison of Prediction Scores Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— SPAN-100 had the worst predictive power, and SEDAN constantly the highest predictive power. However, none of the scores had better than moderate performance.

Outcome determinants of stroke in a brazilian primary stroke center.
Conclusions. The stroke mortality and stroke outcome determinants found in the present study do not remarkably differ from studies carried out in developed countries. Stroke prognosis studies are crucial to better understand the high burden of stroke in Brazil. PMID: 25580352 [PubMed]

Community-Based Case-Control Study of Childhood Stroke Risk Associated With Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CHD is an important childhood stroke risk factor. Children who undergo CHD surgery remain at elevated risk outside the perioperative period and would benefit from optimized long-term stroke prevention strategies.

The pooled incidence of post-stroke seizure in 102 008 patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed that seizures occurred in about 6.93% of people with stroke. Seizures occurred more commonly after hemorrhagic stroke and when stroke occurred in the cortical region. PMID: 25920619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Peripheral Blood MCEMP1 Gene Expression as a Biomarker for Stroke Prognosis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study demonstrates that peripheral blood expression of MCEMP1 may have utility for stroke diagnosis and as a prognostic biomarker of stroke outcome at 1-month.

Trends in Age of First-Ever Stroke Following Increased Incidence and Life Expectancy in a Low-Income Chinese Population Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The age of stroke onset tends to be younger among low-income population in China after the dramatic increased incidence of stroke during the gradual extension of life expectancy of population in China. These findings suggested that stroke burden will continue to increase in the long time, unless the risk factors in low-income populations are effectively controlled.

Long-Term Risk of Dementia Among Survivors of Ischemic or Hemorrhagic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Stroke increases dementia risk. Survivors of intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage are at particularly high long-term risk of poststroke dementia.

Inpatient rehabilitation facilities' hospital readmission rates for medicare beneficiaries treated following a stroke.
CONCLUSION: Results suggest it is feasible to assess hospital readmission rates among a stroke-cohort treated in IRFs. Stroke-focused quality measures would be useful to patients in selecting a provider and for providers in evaluating their stroke rehabilitation program outcomes. Secondary results suggest that admission function (FIM) capture stroke severity, a limitation with other claims-based stroke measures. PMID: 32657256 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cilostazol for the Prevention of Acute Progressing Stroke: A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: Cilostazol failed to show a preventive effect against acute progressing stroke. However, the tendency to reduce progressing stroke and the results of stratified analyses may encourage additional studies to clarify the effect of cilostazol in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke.

Ethnic Disparities in Ischemic Stroke, Intracerebral Hemorrhage, and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Incidence in The Netherlands Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Our findings suggest that Surinamese have an increased risk, whereas Moroccans have a reduced risk for all the various stroke subtypes. Among other ethnic minorities, the risk seems to depend on the stroke subtype and sex. These findings underscore the need to identify the root causes of these ethnic differences to assist primary and secondary prevention efforts.
