Interventions for acute stroke management in Africa: a systematic review of the evidence
ConclusionEvidence from this review confirms the widespread assertion of low applicability and uptake of evidence-based acute stroke care in LMICs. Despite the limited eligible studies, the overall positive patient outcomes following such interventions demonstrate the applicability and value of evidence-based acute stroke care interventions in Africa. Health policy attention is thus required to ensure widespread applicability of such interventions for improved patients ’ outcomes. The review findings also emphasises the need for further research to unravel the reasons for low uptake.Systematic review registrationPROSPEROCRD42016051566

Acupuncture for acute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: This updated review indicates that apparently improved outcomes with acupuncture in acute stroke are confounded by the risk of bias related to use of open controls. Adverse events related to acupuncture were reported to be minor and usually did not result in stopping treatment. Future studies are needed to confirm or refute any effects of acupuncture in acute stroke. Trials should clearly report the method of randomization, concealment of allocation, and whether blinding of participants, personnel, and outcome assessors was achieved, while paying close attention to the effects of acupuncture on long-term funct...

Predictive Factors for the Need of Tracheostomy in Patients With Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke Being Treated With Mechanical Thrombectomy
Conclusions: Patients with LVOS undergoing MT are at high risk to require TS if extubation after the intervention fails, DH is needed, and severe infectious complications occur in the acute phase after ischemic stroke. These factors are likely to be useful for the indication and timing of TS to reduce overall sedation and shorten ICU length of stay.

Risk of Stroke-Associated Pneumonia and Oral Hygiene
Conclusion: In this large hospital-based cohort of patients admitted with acute stroke, systematic OHC use was associated with decreased odds of hospital-acquired pneumonia.Cerebrovasc Dis 2016;41:35-39

Abstract 140: Effects of Smoking Co-Morbidities and Obesity on NonHemorrhagic Stroke Outcomes Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: Smokers present with non-hemorrhagic stroke at a significantly younger age than non-smokers and die at much younger age during follow-up. While in our cohort smoking was not linked to other traditional risk factors for non-hemorrhagic stroke, it was associated with increased mortality in patients with decreased BMI, dyslipidemia, and with renal disease. "Protective" effect of increased BMI was not observed in smokers.

Variability of Stroke Patients Meeting Endovascular Stroke Trial Criteria in a Non-Clinical Trial Setting
Conclusions The proportion of patients with acute stroke and large vessel occlusion presenting within eight hours that would meet radiological criteria for endovascular stroke trials varies considerably (62-100%) in a cohort outside of clinical trials from an academic comprehensive stroke center. Thus, the radiological criteria used for candidate selection in daily practice will greatly influence the proportion of patients treated with endovascular therapy.

The Role of Apathy and Depression on Verbal Learning and Memory Performance After Stroke.
Conclusions: These results suggest that apathy, not depression, is related to verbal memory performance in stroke patients. Future research should explore whether treatment of apathy (e.g., improving motivation) could be a novel target for improving cognition after stroke. Researchers should also examine whether this model can be applied to other aspects of cognition, including executive function and other areas of memory including autobiographical and working memory. Eligibility Determination for Intravenous Thrombolysis Based on Radiology Interpretation Report of the Head CT Scan in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONOur study demonstrates that administering IV t‐PA to patients based on the stroke team's interpretation of the CT scan versus review of the radiology interpretation does not lead to significant differences in clinical outcome, aICH, or sICH.

Abstract 105: Obesity Paradox in Patients with Non-Hemorrhagic Stroke: Increased Short-Term Survival with Decreased Longevity Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Obese patients present with non-hemorrhagic stroke at a younger age. Despite short term improved outcomes, obesity is not associated with improved overall longevity.

Facial Colliculus and Opalski Stroke Syndromes Caused by Vertebral Artery Dissection. Case Report (P4.349)
Conclusion: Brainstem stroke syndromes are challenging to localize before brain imaging. In this case two embolic strokes happened. The first in the right facial colliculus causing the right 6th and 7th cranial nerves palsy. The second happened in the left lateral medulla extending below the pyramidal decussation causing a classical left lateral medullary syndrome with ipsilateral hemiparesis, which constitute a left Opalski stroke syndrome.Disclosure: Dr. Alghamdi has nothing to disclose. Acid‐Suppressive Medication Use in Acute Stroke and Hospital‐Acquired Pneumonia
ABSTRACT Objective: Pneumonia is a morbid complication of stroke, but evidence‐based strategies for its prevention are lacking. Acid‐suppressive medications have been associated with increased risk for nosocomial pneumonia in hospitalized patients. It is unclear whether these results can be extrapolated to stroke patients, where other factors strongly modulate pneumonia risk. We investigated the association between acid‐suppressive medication and hospital‐acquired pneumonia in patients with acute stroke. Methods: All patients hospitalized with acute ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage in a large, urban acad...
