Prediction of the 4-Year Incidence Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Healthy Japanese Adults: The Fukushima Health Database
CONCLUSIONS: The 4-year risk prediction model revealed a good performance for IS incidence, and risk scores could be used to estimate individual incidence risk of IS. Updated models with additional confirmed risk variables may be needed.PMID:37661424 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64018

Genes That Extend Lifespan May Do So by Mitigating the Increased Risk of Death Posed by Having Hypertension
Am J Hypertens. 2023 Aug 10:hpad070. doi: 10.1093/ajh/hpad070. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenetic factors influence lifespan. In humans, there appears to be a particularly strong genetic effect in those aged ≥ 90 years. An important contribution is nutrient sensing genes which confer cell resilience. Our research has been investigating the genetic factors by longitudinal studies of American men of Japanese descent living on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This cohort began as the Honolulu Heart Program in the mid-1960s and most subjects are now deceased. We previously discovered various genes containing polymorphisms as...

Real ‐world risk of cardiovascular diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes associated with sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors in comparison with metformin: A propensity score‐matched model analysis in Japan
Risk of CVD using SGLT2Is compared with metformin. AbstractWe aimed to compare the effects of cardiovascular disease risk in Japanese patients with type  2 diabetes on sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2Is) or metformin. This retrospective, real-world cohort study was carried out using a claims database and propensity score matching; 58,402 eligible patients (29,201 per group) were included. The outcomes included nonfatal myocardi al infarction, angina pectoris, nonfatal stroke, hospitalization for heart failure and composite end-points. The hazard ratio (HR) for the composite end-point was 0.79, which w...

Elevated Aminotransferase Levels and Intracerebral Hemorrhage Deaths in a General Japanese Population
Int Heart J. 2023;64(4):678-683. doi: 10.1536/ihj.23-027.ABSTRACTAlthough chronic liver disease has been associated with cardiovascular disease, to which metabolic syndrome might be related, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) generally has not been focused. Associations of chronic liver disease assessed by aspartate (AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferase levels with ICH deaths were examined using 15,952 subjects without a history of cardiovascular disease who underwent annual health checkups in 1997 in Japan. Proportional hazards regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, hypertension, current smoking, diabetes mellitus, dri...
