Life-Space Mobility: Normative Values from a National Cohort of U.S. Older Adults
CONCLUSIONS: We report US national norms for LSA among community-dwelling Black and White older adults. These norms can serve as a reference tool for determining if clinical and research samples have greater or lesser life-space mobility than typical older adults in the US for their age and sex.PMID:37480583 | DOI:10.1093/gerona/glad176

How John Fetterman Came Out of the Darkness
When he looks back on the past year—a year in which he nearly died, became a U.S. Senator, and nearly died again—it is the debate that John Fetterman identifies as the breaking point. “The debate lit the mitch,” he says, then shakes his head in frustration and tries again. The right word is there in his brain, but he struggles to get it out. “Excuse me, that should be lit the mitch—” He stops and tries again. “Lit the match,” he says finally. Oct. 25, 2022: the date is lodged in his mind. “I knew I had to do it,” he tells me. “I knew that the vote...

Astrocytes in Post-Stroke Depression: Roles in Inflammation, Neurotransmission, and Neurotrophin Signaling
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2023 Jul 20. doi: 10.1007/s10571-023-01386-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPost-stroke depression (PSD) is a frequent and disabling complication of stroke that affects up to one-third of stroke survivors. The pathophysiology of PSD involves multiple mechanisms, including neurochemical, neuroinflammatory, neurotrophic, and neuroplastic changes. Astrocytes are a type of glial cell that is plentiful and adaptable in the central nervous system. They play key roles in various mechanisms by modulating neurotransmission, inflammation, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity. This review summarizes the latest ev...

Liver function test indices-based prediction model for post-stroke depression: a multicenter, retrospective study
Post-stroke depression (PSD) was one of the most prevalent and serious neuropsychiatric effects after stroke. Nevertheless, the association between liver function test indices and PSD remains elusive, and ther...

Comparative study of ultrasonic-guided betamethasone local injection and extracorporeal shock wave therapy in post-stroke hemiplegic shoulder pain: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionThe ultrasonic-guided betamethasone local injection and extracorporeal shock wave both can improve hemiplegic shoulder pain. However, the UGLI can induce a more cytokine expression level.

Scientists Are Just Beginning to Understand COVID-19 ’ s Effect On the Brain
Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors started to notice something striking. For what was originally described as a respiratory virus, SARS-CoV-2 seemed to have a strong effect on the brain, causing everything from loss of taste and smell and brain fog to, in serious cases, stroke. NYU Langone Health, a New York city research hospital, started collating those anecdotes in hopes of better understanding how the virus affects the brain and nervous system. Years later, the project has morphed from focusing solely on acute symptoms to also tracking the long-term neurologic issues that some people with Long COVID experience, sa...

The structured ambulatory post-stroke care program for outpatient aftercare in patients with ischaemic stroke in Germany (SANO): an open-label, cluster-randomised controlled trial
This study was registered with the German Clinical Trials Register, DRKS00015322.FINDINGS: Between Jan 1, 2019 and Dec 22, 2020, 36 clusters were assessed for eligibility, of which 30 were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=15 clusters) or control group (n=15 clusters). No clusters dropped out of the study. 1203 (86%) of 1396 enrolled patients in the intervention group and 1283 (92%) of 1395 enrolled patients in the control group were included in the mITT population. The primary endpoint was confirmed in 64 (5·3%) of 1203 patients in the intervention group and 80 (6·2%) of 1283 patients in the control group (...

Identification of a miRNA –mRNA regulatory network for post-stroke depression: a machine-learning approach
ConclusionThe study highlighted gene signatures for PSD with three genes (SPATA2, ZNF208, and YTHDC1) and four upstream miRNAs (miR-6883-5p, miR-6873-3p, miR-4776-3p, and miR-6738-3p). These biomarkers could further our understanding of the pathogenesis of PSD.

Herbal medicine as adjunctive therapy with antidepressants for post-stroke depression: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
This study summarizes the latest evidence regarding the harms and benefits of herbal antidepressants. Methods: The literature searched from the Cochrane Library (using the OVID platform), Embase, PubMed, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the Wan Fang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and the China Scientific Journal Database (VIP) from their inception to 18 August 2021, for randomized controlled trials of herbal medicine in adults with post-stroke depression, were included in this systematic review and network meta-analysis. The search was updated on 1 December 2022. To summarize the evidence, the frequenti...
