Cardiovascular Benefit of CPAP in Adults with Coronary Artery Disease and OSA without Excessive Sleepiness
CONCLUSIONS: The protective effect of CPAP in patients with CAD and OSA without excessive sleepiness was modified by the ∆HR. Specifically, patients with higher ∆HR exhibit greater cardiovascular benefit from CPAP therapy.PMID:35579605 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202111-2608OC

Heart health in polycystic ovary syndrome: time to act on the data
Fertil Steril. 2022 May;117(5):885-886. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2022.03.014.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), first described over 80 years ago, is a chronic condition with gynecologic, metabolic, and psychologic manifestations. Both hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance are associated with the high prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors described in this population. Although robust data in reproductive-age women demonstrate a high rate of obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, studies show mixed results in the adolescent and menopausal age groups. There is ...

Bidirectional relationships of comorbidity with obstructive sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is frequently associated with comorbidities that include metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary and neuropsychiatric. There is considerable evidence that OSA is an independent risk factor for many of these comorbidities but, more recently, there is evidence that some of these comorbidities may predispose to the development of OSA. Thus, there is growing evidence of a bidirectional relationship between OSA and comorbidity, especially for heart failure, metabolic syndrome and stroke. Potential mechanisms of bidirectional relationships differ in individual comorbidities with fluid retention...

Clinical information predicting severe obstructive sleep apnea: A cross-sectional study of patients waiting for sleep diagnostics
CONCLUSIONS: Based on a prediction score derived from simple, easily available data, patients unlikely to suffer from severe OSA can be identified, and thus facilitate more urgent consideration of patients more likely to have severe OSA.PMID:35490509 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2022.106860

The Cardiovascular and Metabolic Effects of Chronic Hypoxia in Animal Models: A Mini-Review
Front Physiol. 2022 Mar 31;13:873522. doi: 10.3389/fphys.2022.873522. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTAnimal models are useful to understand the myriad physiological effects of hypoxia. Such models attempt to recapitulate the hypoxemia of human disease in various ways. In this mini-review, we consider the various animal models which have been deployed to understand the effects of chronic hypoxia on pulmonary and systemic blood pressure, glucose and lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis, and stroke. Chronic sustained hypoxia (CSH)-a model of chronic lung or heart diseases in which hypoxemia may be longstanding and persistent, or of hi...

A long-term ischemic stroke risk score model in patients aged 60 years and older with obstructive sleep apnea: a multicenter prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: This model can help to identify high-risk OSA patients for early interventions of the risks of ischemic stroke associated with OSA.PMID:35426796 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2022.03.04
