For Debate: Screening for Asymptomatic Carotid Plaques with Ultrasound
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially coronary heart disease (CHD), remains the leading cause of premature death worldwide.1 Regrettably, CVD killed 17.5 million people in 2012, which accounts for 3 in every 10 deaths. Of these, 7.4 million people died of ischemic heart disease and 6.7 million from stroke.2 CVD affects both men and women and of all deaths that occur before the age of 75 in Europe, 42% are caused by CVD in women and 38% in men.1

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Incident ESRD: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Carotid intima-media thickness was independently associated with incident ESRD in the general population, suggesting the shared etiology of atherosclerosis and ESRD. PMID: 27073198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cranial Ultrasonography in Term Infants and Stroke: When Is It Useful? (P6.333)
Conclusion: Cranial ultrasonography has poor sensitivity in detecting ischemic infarcts in term infants. Advanced neuroimaging should be pursued if there is high clinical suspicion for ischemic infarcts in the neonatal period and beyond.Disclosure: Dr. Mondok has nothing to disclose. Dr. Friedman has nothing to disclose.

Can HRT in early menopause cut heart disease risk?
ConclusionThis double-blind RCT found that women taking HRT less than six years after the menopause had slower artery wall thickening than those taking a placebo. This represented the main measure of atherosclerosis progression tested; other measures showed no difference, so the results were not as conclusive as they could have been. Women taking HRT 10 or more years after menopause also showed no difference in atherosclerosis progression compared with a placebo, further complicating the picture. An important limitation of this study is the lack of a patient relevant endpoint, such as cardiovascular events or mortality. Seven key actions to eradicate rheumatic heart disease in Africa: the Addis Ababa communiqué.
nedy N, Lwabi P, Mamo Y, Mntla P, Sutton C, Mocumbi AO, Mondo C, Mtaja A, Musuku J, Mucumbitsi J, Murango L, Nel G, Ogendo S, Ogola E, Ojji D, Olunuga TO, Redi MM, Rusingiza KE, Sani M, Sheta S, Shongwe S, van Dam J, Gamra H, Carapetis J, Lennon D, Mayosi BM Abstract Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain major causes of heart failure, stroke and death among African women and children, despite being preventable and imminently treatable. From 21 to 22 February 2015, the Social Cluster of the Africa Union Commission (AUC) hosted a consultation with RHD experts convened by the Pan-Africa...

Common carotid artery end-diastolic velocity is independently associated with future cardiovascular events
Conclusions Low common carotid EDV and PSV were independently associated with future CVD, and EDV improved the prediction of future CVD. More prospective studies are required in different ethnic groups to understand the significance and implication of these findings.

Association Between Abnormal Course of Carotid Artery and Cerebrovascular Disease.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of ABCA in the present study is significantly lower than that in previous studies (Togay-Isikay et al., 24.6%, Del Corso et al., 58%). ABCA is more frequent in women and older patients. ABCA is not related to stroke and stroke risk factors. From our results, we suggest that patients with ABCA be placed under observation unless they exhibit neurological symptoms. PMID: 26077180 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Qingdao Port Cardiovascular Health Study: a prospective cohort study
Purpose In China, efforts are underway to respond to rapidly increasing rates of heart disease and stroke. Yet the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in China may be different from that of other populations. Thus, there is a critical need for population-based studies that provide insight into the risk factors, incidence and outcomes of cardiovascular disease in China. The Qingdao Port Cardiovascular Health Study is designed to investigate the burden of cardiovascular disease and the sociodemographic, biological, environmental and clinical risk factors associated with disease onset and outcomes. Participants For this s...

High intensity focused ultrasound ablation for atrial fibrillation: results from the National Spanish Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish national registry showed an efficacy of AF ablation with the HIFU Epicor system of 66.1%, 63.8%, 63.9% and 45.9% at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months follow-up. There was no device-related complications. PMID: 26006216 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

On ultrasound classification of stroke risk factors from randomly chosen respondents using non-invasive multispectral ultrasonic brain measurements and adaptive profiles
Publication date: Available online 24 October 2015 Source:Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering Author(s): Miroslaw Wrobel, Andrzej Dabrowski, Adam Kolany, Anna Olak-Popko, Robert Olszewski, Pawel Karlowicz In this paper, we present a new brain diagnostic method based on a computer aided multispectral ultrasound diagnostics method (CAMUD). We explored the standard values of the relative time of flight (RIT), as well as the attenuation, ATN, of multispectral longitudinal ultrasound waves propagated non-invasively through the brains of a standard Caucasian volunteer population across different ages and genders. Stroke associated with coronary artery bypass grafting
Abstract While coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been playing a significant role in the revascularization for ischemic heart disease, neurological complications associated with CABG have been a primary concern. Stroke, although the incidence is low, is one of the most devastating complication of CABG. Many studies have identified the risk factors for stroke with CABG, such as prior stroke, carotid artery stenosis, aortic atherosclerosis, atrial fibrillation and cardiopulmonary bypass. Various rational approaches focusing on individual risk factor have been proposed for the stroke. Prophylactic carotid rev...

Comparison of Coronary Artery Calcium Presence, Carotid Plaque Presence, and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness for Cardiovascular Disease Prediction in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Epidemiology
Conclusions— In adults without CVD, CAC presence improves prediction of CVD and CHD more than carotid plaque presence or high IMT. CAC and carotid ultrasound parameters performed similarly for stroke/transient ischemic attack event prediction.
