Stimulator of interferon genes (STING): Key therapeutic targets in ischemia/reperfusion injury
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 10;167:115458. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115458. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) is predominantly expressed in immune cells, including macrophages, natural killer cells, dendritic cells, and T cells, functioning as a pattern recognition receptor. STING activation upon detecting cytosolic DNA released from damaged cells initiates downstream pathways, leading to the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IFNs, IL-6, and TNF-α. Dysregulated STING activation has been implicated in inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R...

Screening and Management of Coronary Artery Disease in Kidney Transplant Candidates
Diagnostics (Basel). 2023 Aug 20;13(16):2709. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics13162709.ABSTRACTCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and during the first year after transplantation. For these reasons, and due to the shortage of organs available for transplant, it is of utmost importance to identify patients with a good life expectancy after transplant and minimize the transplant peri-operative risk. Various conditions, such as severe pulmonary diseases, recent myocardial infarction or stroke, and ...

Global Economic Burden Associated with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Pragmatic Review of Medical Costs for the Inside CKD Research Programme
CONCLUSION: Globally, CKD carries a significant economic burden, which increases substantially with increasing disease severity. We identified significant gaps in published costs and inconsistent costing definitions. Cost-effective interventions that target primary prevention and disease progression are essential to reduce CKD burden. Our results can be used to guide cost collection and facilitate better comparisons across countries/regions to inform healthcare policy.PMID:37493856 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02608-9

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers for adults with early (stage 1 to 3) non-diabetic chronic kidney disease
CONCLUSIONS: There is currently insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of ACEi or ARB in patients with stage 1 to 3 CKD who do not have DM. The available evidence is overall of very low certainty and high risk of bias. We have identified an area of large uncertainty for a group of patients who account for most of those diagnosed as having CKD.PMID:37466151 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD007751.pub3

The association between intraoperative cardiopulmonary bypass power and complications after cardiac surgery
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that MAP during cardiopulmonary bypass, but not power or flow, was an independent risk factor for adverse renal outcomes for cardiac surgical patients.PMID:37442644 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231187958

Atherosclerosis on CT coronary angiography and risk of long-term cardiovascular events post liver transplantation
CONCLUSION: The standardized CAD-RADS classification on CTCA predicted the occurrence of cardiovascular outcomes following LT, with a potential to increase utilization of preventive cardiovascular therapies.PMID:37432891 | DOI:10.1097/LVT.0000000000000215

Chronic myeloid leukemia, tyrosine kinase inhibitors and cardiovascular system
CONCLUSIONS: The current CML treatment target is a cure that leads to normal age and gender-adjusted survival with a "normal" quality of life. Cardiovascular disorders are one of the major obstacles to reaching this target in CML patients. The treatment choices for CML patients must include a cardiovascular perspective.PMID:37401285 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202306_32786
