Effect of white matter lesions on manual dexterity in healthy middle-aged persons
Conclusions: Greater WML volumes in different brain regions are associated with higher pegboard scores (worse performance) independent of age, sex, race, education, and total or regional volumes. This suggests that small vessel cerebrovascular disease may be present in healthy individuals in a preclinical state with measurable impact on complex integrative functions in individuals with excess risk of clinical vascular disease.

Sleep duration is associated with worse neurocognitive function in Hispanic/Latinos: Results of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) (I9-4A)
CONCLUSIONS: Sleep duration had an inverted J-shaped curvilinear association with neurocognitive function, such that those with longer sleep duration had worse neurocognitive scores. Study Supported by: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos was carried out as a collaborative study supported by contracts from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to the University of North Carolina (N01-HC65233), University of Miami (N01-HC65234), Albert Einstein College of Medicine (N01-HC65235), Northwestern University (N01-HC65236), and San Diego State University (N01-HC65237). "I know it but I can't say it": Using self-report to understand the experience of inner speech in aphasia (P1.211)
CONCLUSIONS: Most people with aphasia report experience of internal word retrieval processes that surpass overt naming ability. Their subjective reports suggest that they can distinguish between the two distinct internal experiences of anomia reflected by our hypothesis. Preliminary VLSM results further support the dissociation. We suggest that these two experiences reflect differing levels of lexical access: sIS relies on phonological access, whereas the perception of "knowing it" relies on semantic or lemma access.Disclosure: Dr. Fama has nothing to disclose. The association of sleep apnea and stroke with cognitive performance: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study (I9-4B)
CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that S+SA is associated with lower verbal memory and executive function scores (but not highest global cognitive impairment) than SA only, stroke only, or neither.Disclosure: Dr. Molano has nothing to disclose. Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Neuropathological Diagnosis of Primary Alzheimer's Disease (I9-5A)
CONCLUSIONS: AF-AD has a more "vascular" and "benign" profile than nAF-AD. Dementia seems to be mediated by brain infarcts rather than by neurodegeneration. Cognitive and motor function of orthostatic hypotension patient taking alpha-blocker for benign prostate hypertrophy - Preliminary study (P1.289)
Conclusions: Substantial portion of BPH patients taking alpha-blocker develop OH. This "induced" OH had no significant effect on cognitive function, but it might be possibly associated with working memory impairment and motor slowing in the elderly. Further confirmative investigation would be necessary.Disclosure: Dr. Park has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ahn has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kwon has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kim has nothing to disclose. How often is CADASIL diagnosed as multiple sclerosis? (P4.076)
CONCLUSIONS: CADASIL presents in young adults with subcortical ischemic events. Clinically, similar to MS, these are episodes of recurrent acute focal neurologic deficit with partial or complete recovery. MRI shows diffuse asymmetric T2 white matter abnormalities in periventricular and subcortical white matter. With advent of immune modulating therapy, MS has become more amenable to treatment whereas there is no treatment for CADASIL, which may make clinicians more inclined to diagnose MS. Close attention must be paid to history of migraine with aura as well as family history of migraine, stroke and dementia to accurately ...

Limbic Encephalitis Exacerbations and Remissions Charted by Microglial PET Scan: A Case Study (P4.104)
CONCLUSIONS: C-11-PK11195 PET imaging can be useful in the diagnosis of limbic encephalitis and for monitoring response to treatment. MALT lymphoma may also be associated with autoimmune or paraneoplastic encephalitis, especially in individuals with other predisposing factors to autoimmune disorders, such as Tourette’s and autoimmune thyroid disease. The reduction in microglial activity with both IVIG and anti-psychotics supports previous findings that anti-psychotics may act through anti-inflammatory pathways.Disclosure: Dr. Shatz has received research support from Janssen Pharmaceutica. Mitochondrial Encephalopathy with Lactic Acidosis and Stroke (MELAS) presenting as an apparent neoplastic process (P5.015)
CONCLUSION: MELAS can mimic more common disorders. The slow onset of her symptoms and the MRI's appearance led to suspicion for neoplasm. This is the first report to our knowledge where MELAS has presented as such. Documentation of this and other unusual presentations of mitochondrial disease is crucial to appropriate diagnosis of the condition.Disclosure: Dr. Rothstein has nothing to disclose. Demographics, Comorbidities and Clinical Features in Hospitalized Patients with Myoclonus (P3.022)
CONCLUSIONS: Myoclonus was particularly associated with renal impairment in the presence of a toxic exposure, most commonly opioids or anticonvulsants, and unlike patients with anoxia or hepatic impairment, more often featured a negative semiology.Disclosure: Dr. Ehrlich has nothing to disclose. Tactile unawareness in acute right hemispheric stroke (P1.207)
CONCLUSIONS:Tactile unawareness is common in acute right MCA stroke. Bedside findings can help dissociate primary sensory deficit from somatosensory hemi-inattention. The importance of spatial attention in tactile awareness is substantiated by the lesion sites associated with the disorder: regions crucial for multi-sensory integration and bodily awareness. Lateral Eye Deviation and Post-Stroke Spatial Neglect (P1.208)
CONCLUSIONS: Why CBS-defined and BIT-defined neglect resulted in different patterns of eye deviation is unclear. This could reflect greater sensitivity of functional performance testing for neglect, or greater relation of spontaneous behavior assessed by the CBS with eye deviation, as contrasted with responses directly elicited during neuropsychological testing. Research to identify specific mechanisms predisposing patients to rightward eye deviation may be helpful to develop a more complex model to evaluate for potential clinical screening. Anatomical and Psychophysical Comparison of Subjective Verticals in Patients with Right Brain Damage (P1.209)
CONCLUSIONS: Errors in visual and visual-haptic SVs were related to lesions in visual associative cortex. The visual SV and especially the visual-haptic SV provide valuable estimates of patient difficulties, in view of the lower associated variable errors (i.e. greater precision) and closer relationships with clinical disorders.Disclosure: Dr. SAJ has nothing to disclose.
