Cholesterol, Statins and the Risk of Dementia in the Oldest-Old: The 90+ Study (S58.003)
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to studies reporting that high cholesterol is associated with decreased dementia in the oldest-old, we report that hypercholesterolemia was not associated with dementia while statin users were at decreased dementia risk. There are a variety of mechanisms by which statins may be neuroprotective including effects on amyloid production, neurofibrillary tangles, secondary stroke prevention, and other anti-inflammatory pleiotropic effects. Factor Scores for Brain Reserve, Alzheimer and Vascular Pathology are Independent Risk Factors for Dementia in a Population-based Cohort Study: The Kame Project (S58.006)
CONCLUSIONS: Brain reserve appears to play a very important role in buffering the effects of Alzheimer and vascular pathology on dementia risk. CONCLUSIONS:This rare case confirms the the importance of akinetopsia, which has historically well described in the last century and was attributed to the vascular causes, trauma and dementia. In this case a bilateral stroke in the occipital lobes, presumably affecting the V5 area was confirmed by MR.
