Alcohol consumption and risk of cardiovascular outcomes and bleeding in patients with established atrial fibrillation
CMAJ. 2021 Jan 25;193(4):E117-E123. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.200778.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between alcohol consumption and risk of cardiovascular events in patients with established atrial fibrillation (AF). The main aim of the current study was to investigate the associations of regular alcohol intake with incident stroke or systemic embolism in patients with established AF.METHODS: To assess the association between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular events in patients with established AF, we combined data from 2 comparable prospective cohort studies that followed 3852 patients with AF for ...

Long-term Clinical Outcomes of Underdosed Direct Oral Anticoagulants in patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter
Although direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been shown to be effective at reducing the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF), they are sometimes underdosed off-label to mitigate their associated higher bleeding risk. We sought to evaluate frequency and clinical outcomes of inappropriate underdosing of DOACS in patients with AF.

A Real-world Experience of the Safety and Efficacy of Non-vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin in Patients with Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation-A Single-centre Retrospective Cohort Study in Singapore
CONCLUSION: NOACs were associated with similar stroke and major bleeding rates as warfarin for NVAF.PMID:33381777 | DOI:10.47102/annals-acadmedsg.2020184

Left ventricular thrombus after ST segment elevation myocardial infarction: a single-centre observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of LV thrombus following STEMI was low and it was associated with a low rate of stroke and systemic embolism but high mortality. Randomised studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of NOAC's in this context. PMID: 33332339 [PubMed - in process]

Association between use of amiodarone for non-valvular atrial fibrillation and patient survival: from the prospective China Atrial Fibrillation Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that amiodarone use was not significantly associated with a lower risk of 1-year all-cause mortality compared with a non-AAD strategy in "real-world" patients with NVAF. PMID: 33273373 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evolving Approaches to Antithrombotics in Stroke Prevention and Treatment.
Authors: Javalkar V, Kuybu O, Amireh A, Kelley RE Abstract The optimization of antithrombotic therapy for acute stroke treatment and secondary prevention is an evolving process based on an increasing array of studies that provide an evidence-based approach. Options have increased dramatically with the release of the non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants and with the results of recent randomized clinical trials designed to assess potential benefits versus risks for patients in an individualized fashion. Recent studies have provided important information to guide choice and dosing of antiplatelet agents as well as the le...

Patterns of anticoagulation therapy in atrial fibrillation: results from a large real-life single-center registry.
CONCLUSION: Warfarin and DOACs are administered to different target populations, possibly due to socio-economic reasons. Patients receiving warfarin rarely obtain optimal dosing control, and experience significantly shorter survival compared with patients receiving DOACs. PMID: 33150762 [PubMed - in process]
