Effect of Oral Anticoagulants in Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Polypharmacy: A Meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: In patients with AF and polypharmacy, NOACs showed advantages over VKAs in stroke or systemic embolism and any bleeding, and were comparable to VKAs for major bleeding, ischemic stroke, all-cause death, intracranial hemorrhage, and gastrointestinal bleeding.PMID:37399842 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1770724

The association between intraoperative fluid management and perioperative allogenic blood transfusion during adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery
CONCLUSION: These results indicate a statistical association between the increase in crystalloid intake and the risk of allogenic blood transfusion during surgical correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Controlled studies are needed to address the causative relation between intraoperative fluid intake and the risk of allogenic transfusion.PMID:37386846 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14722

Using Aspirin Every Day May Cause Anemia in Seniors
A new study suggests regular aspirin use in older adults may pose a serious risk of anemia, adding to existing research that challenges the long-established recommendation to use aspirin as a preventative therapy for dangerous cardiac events. The results come just a year after a national independent task force updated formal recommendations in April 2022 cautioning those over the age of 60 against beginning a daily aspirin regimen. For decades, aspirin has been used like a vitamin by a sizable portion of America’s aging population. Research as far back as the 1950s showed a daily low dose of the anti-inflammatory me...

The Combinations of the Patterns of Non-Adherence to Anti-Platelet Regimen in Stented Patients (PARIS) and Coronary Revascularization Demonstrating Outcome Study in Kyoto (CREDO-Kyoto) Thrombotic and Bleeding Risk Scores on Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction
Conclusion The combinations of the PARIS and CREDO-Kyoto risk scores might be useful for evaluating ischemic and bleeding risks in patients with acute MI undergoing primary PCI.PMID:37344423 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.2117-23

Antithrombotic therapy for atrial fibrillation in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia
We present a retrospective cohort study investigating antithrombotic therapy in patients with HHT and atrial fibrillation. We found that antithrombotic therapy was poorly tolerated, leading to premature dose-reduction or discontinuation of therapy in a majority of patients and in a majority of treatment episodes. Five patients undergoing left atrial appendage procedures did well despite difficulties completing the prescribed course of post-procedure antithrombotic therapy. Left atrial appendage occlusion or simultaneous administration of systemic anti-angiogenic therapy may represent alternatives but require additional stu...

Should we touch tricuspid valve at the time of LVAD implantation? A young patient series
CONCLUSION: Although the risk of late RVF may increase in patients with preoperative severe TI, not intervening in TI during LVAD implantation does not cause adverse clinical outcomes in the early period.PMID:37334781 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231181604
