proMetalloproteinase-10 is associated with brain damage and clinical outcome in acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased serum proMMP-10 after acute ischemic stroke, associated with TNFα, is a new marker of brain damage and poor outcome. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. PMID: 23742289 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The emerging role of microRNA in stroke.
Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs approximately 22 nucleotides in length that play a pivotal role in post-transcriptional gene regulation by binding to complementary sites in the 3'-untranslated region of messenger RNAs. In the past decade, their role in several human diseases, from cancer to cardiovascular disease, has been established by a wealth of evidence. Stroke is responsible for 10% of deaths worldwide and is one of the leading causes of disability. MiRNAs are involved in stroke risk factors including hypertension, atherosclerosis, atrial fibrillation, diabetes and dyslipidemia. The rol...

Use of Transcranial Doppler (TCD) Ultrasound in the Neurocritical Care Unit
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a portable device that uses a handheld 2-MHz transducer. It is most commonly used in subarachnoid hemorrhage where cerebral blood flow velocities in major intracranial blood vessels are measured to detect vasospasm in the first 2 to 3 weeks. TCD is used to detect vasospasm in traumatic brain injury and post-tumor resection, measurement of cerebral autoregulation and cerebrovascular reactivity, diagnosis of acute arterial occlusions in stroke, screening for patent foramen ovale and monitoring of emboli. It can be used to detect abnormally high intracranial pressure and for confirmation of total...

A Phase IIB Clinical Trial of Normobaric Oxygen Therapy (NBO) in Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) (S02.001)
CONCLUSIONS: NBO did not affect NIHSS or infarct growth in this trial. The observed imbalance in deaths remains unexplained, but appears unrelated to NBO. Further studies are warranted.Supported by: NIH-NINDS.Disclosure: Dr. Singhal has received personal compensation as an expert witness in medicolegal cases involving stroke in young adults. The Current Role and Utility of Diagnostic Catheter Cerebral Angiography (P02.021)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the increased use and availability of noninvasive brain vascular imaging, DSA continues to be used in a variety of indications and appears to yield additional meaningful information despite prior imaging about 30-40% of the time on average. Particularly in those conditions where more precise spatial and temporal resolution would be of theoretical benefit, we did observe a higher percentage of new findings.Disclosure: Dr. Sawiris has nothing to disclose. Stroke in Non-Bacterial Thrombotic Endocarditis: 31-Year Experience (P02.023)
CONCLUSIONS: This 31-year analysis shows that stroke is a frequent complication of NBTE, has severe clinical and radiological manifestations, and high associated mortality. Anticoagulation may not prevent stroke recurrence.Disclosure: Dr. Topcuoglu has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kursun has nothing to disclose. Dr. Karatas has nothing to disclose. UCLA study shows promise, offers hope for brain hemorrhage patients
A new endoscopic surgical procedure has been shown to be safer and to result in better outcomes than the current standard medical treatment for patients who suffer strokes as a result of brain hemorrhages, UCLA neurosurgeons have announced.   The findings from their potentially groundbreaking, randomized, controlled phase 2 clinical trial, which was conducted at multiple medical centers, were presented last week at the International Stroke Conference in Honolulu.   "These exciting results offer a glimmer of hope for a condition that most doctors have traditionally considered hopeless," said principal investigator...

Quantitative imaging assessment of blood-brain barrier permeability in humans
We present preliminary results and show an example which compares these new methods with the existing standard assessment method. We strongly believe that the establishment of such “easy to use” and reliable imaging methods is essential before BBB assessment can become a routine clinical tool. Large clinical trials are awaited to fully understand the significance of BBB permeability as a biomarker and target for treatment in neurological disorders.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Prevent Hydrocephalus After Severe Intraventricular Hemorrhage Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Intraventricular transplantation of umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells significantly attenuated the posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus and brain injury after IVH. This neuroprotective mechanism appears to be mediated by the anti-inflammatory effects of these cells.
