Poorly Differentiated Lung Cancer with Intracardiac Extension Causing Malignant Stroke in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient: a Case Report
SN Compr Clin Med. 2022;4(1):255. doi: 10.1007/s42399-022-01331-w. Epub 2022 Nov 14.ABSTRACTCardiac involvement occurs in an almost one quarter of all the patients with lung cancer. Lymphatogenous spread is a more common route of tumor dissemination than the hematogenous spread. It was a retrospective case report. We hereby report a case of myocardial involvement by non-small cell lung cancer leading to an uncommon presentation of a malignant stroke and death in a peritoneal dialysis patient.PMID:36404986 | PMC:PMC9662106 | DOI:10.1007/s42399-022-01331-w

Hypoxia-inducible factor stabilisers for the anaemia of chronic kidney disease
CONCLUSIONS: HIF stabiliser management of anaemia had uncertain effects on CV death, fatigue, death (any cause), CV outcomes, and kidney failure compared to placebo or ESAs. Compared to placebo or ESAs, HIF stabiliser management of anaemia probably decreased the proportion of patients requiring blood transfusions, and probably increased the proportion of patients reaching the target Hb when compared to placebo.PMID:36005278 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013751.pub2

Anticoagulation in special patient populations with atrial fibrillation
Herz. 2021 Jul 5. doi: 10.1007/s00059-021-05042-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) should be guided by considerations of the risk of thromboembolism, stroke, and bleeding as well as the patient's preference. Well-recognized scores have been developed to help the clinician in daily risk assessment, but there are several special patient populations for whom scores are not developed or validated. Furthermore, these patients were not adequately represented in the pivotal randomized trials for non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs). In patients with cancer, t...

Mass. Hospitals Issue PSA: Don ’ t Wait For Treatment Due To Coronavirus Concerns
BOSTON (CBS) – Doctors from Massachusetts hospitals combined to release a series of public service announcements on Thursday urging people who are suffering from serious conditions not to wait for treatment because of coronavirus fears. Doctors said a significant number people with serious ailments are avoiding treatment because they are concerned about being exposed to coronavirus. The series of PSAs will air on Boston television stations starting Thursday. “It’s important that people are cared for when they’re sick, whether that’s for COVID-19 or for something else,” Gov. Charlie Baker said during...

Chronic disease burdens of incident U.S.  dialysis patients, 1996 - 2015
.
DISCUSSION: Mortality and cardiovascular disease burden have declined for dialysis patients in the United States despite an aging population that is increasingly hypertensive and diabetic. Comorbid disease burdens among HD and PD patients have diverged over time, with PD patients having fewer comorbid conditions.

Association of early loss of primary functional patency of arteriovenous access with mortality in incident hemodialysis patients: A nationwide population-based observational study
The long-term survival and life quality of hemodialysis (HD) patients depend on adequacy of dialysis via a well-functioning vascular access. Loss of primary functional patency (PFP) of an arteriovenous access (AVA) eventually happens in HD patients. The association between time to loss of PFP of AVAs and mortality in HD patients remains unclear. The retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study compared the hazards of mortality with time to loss of PFP. We enrolled 1618 adult incident HD patients who received HD via AVAs for at least 90 days between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2013. They were divided into ear...
