Investigation of Factors That Affect the Quality of Life After a Stroke
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1425:437-442. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-31986-0_42.ABSTRACTStroke, as a disease, describes a group of disorders characterized by the presence of central nervous system symptoms either as a result of ischemia (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). The appearance of a stroke results in a permanent physical or cognitive disability. The stroke incidence is the third cause of death after heart disease and cancer, and is the main cause of long-term disability. The effects of a stroke on a patient's daily life, and hence on his quality of life, are intense and long-lasting. These include memory pro...

Score for Predicting Active Cancer in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Retrospective Study
CONCLUSIONS: We devised a clinical score to predict active cancer in patients with ischemic stroke based on the absence of a history of hyperlipidemia and elevated serum D-dimer and fibrinogen levels. The use of this score may allow for early intervention. Further research is needed to confirm the implementation of this score in clinical settings.PMID:34124248 | PMC:PMC8169246 | DOI:10.1155/2021/5585206

Disorder Genes Regulate the Progression of Ischemic Stroke through the NF- < em > κ < /em > B Signaling Pathway
Biomed Res Int. 2021 Oct 27;2021:2464269. doi: 10.1155/2021/2464269. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTStroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Stroke is the second leading cause of death after ischemic heart disease, which accounts for 9% of the global death toll. To explore the molecular mechanisms of the effects of the dysregulated factors, in the GEO database, we obtained transcriptome data from 24 h/72 h of mice with ischemic stroke and 24 h/72 h of normal mice. We then performed differential gene analysis, coexpression analysis, enrichment analysis, and regulator prediction bioinf...

Heat shock protein 90 inhibition by 17-Dimethylaminoethylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin protects blood-brain barrier integrity in cerebral ischemic stroke.
Authors: Qi J, Liu Y, Yang P, Chen T, Liu XZ, Yin Y, Zhang J, Wang F Abstract Metalloproteinase (MMP)9 plays a pivotal role in ischemic stroke induced blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Correlation between HSP90 and MMP9 in several diseases prompted us to evaluate the efficacy of HSP90 inhibition as a novel approach to protect BBB integrity in ischemic stroke. ELISA was used to detect HSP90α and MMP9 in serum samples of stroke patients, which showed that HSP90α significantly correlated with MMP9 among 63 serum samples of stroke patients. Male C57/BL6 mice were pretreated with 17-Dimethylaminoethylamino-17-deme...

Evaluating the Primary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke of Oral Antithrombotic Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer Patients with Radiation Therapy.
Abstract Although previous studies demonstrated the risk of ischemic stroke (IS) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), the impact of oral antithrombotic therapy (OAT) on this risk has not yet been assessed. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of OAT in patients with HNC treated with RT. This retrospective cohort study was performed using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. A total of 37,638 patients diagnosed with HNC included in the study were classified as users and nonusers of OAT. Primary outcome was IS or transient ischemic attack (TIA), and secondary outcomes were ...

U-Shaped Relationship Between Cardiovascular Mortality and Serum Uric Acid May Be Attributed to Stroke- and Heart-Specific Mortality, Respectively, Among Hypertensive Patients: A Nationally Representative Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed a U-shaped relationship between serum UA levels and total and cardiovascular mortality in patients with hypertension. Furthermore, low UA was associated with stroke mortality, while higher UA was associated with heart-related mortality. Further research is needed to identify the potential mechanisms of UA in hypertension. PMID: 33534782 [PubMed - in process]

Stress-Induced Stroke and Stomach Cancer: Sex Differences in Oxygen Saturation.
Authors: Ulanova M, Gekalyuk A, Agranovich I, Khorovodov A, Rezunbaeva V, Borisova E, Sharif AE, Navolokin N, Shuvalova E, Semyachkina-Glushkovskaya O Abstract Sex differences in stress-related diseases such as stroke and stomach cancer are well established, but the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unknown. Despite the fact that sexual hormones play an important role in the high resistance of females to harmful effects of stress compared with males, the regulation of oxygenation status can be a potential factor, which might explain sex differences in stress-induced cerebrovascular catastrophes in newbor...

Ovarian Cancer Presenting as Cryptogenic Stroke from Patent Foramen Ovale.
Abstract A 52-year-old woman experienced severe headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, and diplopia for three days. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed multiple acute and subacute infarcts suggestive of embolic events. Dermatological examination was notable for splinter hemorrhages and macular patches on the fingernails and feet, respectively. Further diagnostic imaging of the chest and abdomen revealed pulmonary emboli and an ovarian mass with omental deposits and splenic infarcts. Fine needle aspiration cytology and surgery confirmed a diagnosis of high grade serous adenocarcinoma of the ovary with c...

Efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke in cancer patients: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
Authors: Huang S, Lu X, Tang LV, Hu Y Abstract The efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in cancer patients remained uncertain due to low level evidence in the latest guideline for AIS. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of IVT in cancer patients with stronger evidence. We searched Medline, Embase, CENTRAL and ClinicalTrials.gov until April 2020 for studies reporting outcomes of functional independence, hemorrhagic transformation (HT), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (SICH), major bleeding (MB), in-hospital mortality or 3-month mortality a...

The Role of Beta-Blockers in the Treatment of Hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Primary/essential hypertension in younger/middle-age is underpinned by high sympathetic nerve activity. In this age-group high resting heart rates and high plasma norepinephrine levels (independent of blood pressure) are linked to premature cardiovascular events and death. Thus, anti-hypertensive agents that increase sympathetic nerve activity ie diuretics, dihydropyridine calcium blockers, and ARBs, are inappropriate first-line choices in this younger age-group. Beta-blockers perform well vs randomised placebo and other antihypertensive agents regarding reduced risk of death/stroke/myocardial in...
