Implementation of Prevention Science to Eliminate Health Care Inequities in Achieving Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001171. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevention of cardiovascular and related diseases is foundational to attaining ideal cardiovascular health to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities. Social determinants of health and health care inequities adversely affect ideal cardiovascular health and prevention of disease. Achieving optimal cardiovascular health in an effective and equitable manner requires a coordinated multidisciplinary and multilayered approach. In this scientific statement, we examine barriers to ideal cardiovascular health ...

The potential predictive value of cardiac mechanics for left ventricular reverse remodelling in dilated cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsPatients with LVRR had a lower LV volume index, lower LVSV index, lower LGE extent, higher LVRI, and preserved myocardial deformation in the longitudinal direction at baseline. LVRI and rGLPS at baseline were independent determinants of LVRR.

Experience and insights from a prolonged electrocardiographic monitorization with a wearable system after an embolic stroke of unknown source
ConclusionPCMw represents a feasible non-invasive device that could reliably detect subclinical AF episodes after an ESUS. Diagnostic yield was significatively higher when used within the first 30  days after the event, especially in selected patients. UAE were common, but did not impact prognosis.

Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts-Part 2
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230911115725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity/mortality world-wide, hence preventive interventions are crucial. Observational data showing beneficial CV-effects of vitamin supplements, promoted by self-proclaimed experts, have led to ~50% of Americans using multivitamins; this practice has culminated into a multi-billion-dollar business. However, robust evidence is lacking, and certain vitamins might incur harm. This two-part review focuses on the attributes or concerns about specific vitamin consumption on ...

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health and Lifestyle on the Association of Lipoprotein(a) with Myocardial Infarction and Stroke
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: SDOH and lifestyle factors were predictors for MI and stroke that did not impact the association between Lp(a) and cardiovascular events. Our findings support that Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for MI and possibly stroke.PMID:37693416 | PMC:PMC10491356 | DOI:10.1101/2023.09.01.23294968

Temporal trends of case-fatality in patients undergoing dual-injection coronary chronic total occlusion recanalization
ConclusionAnnual number of CTO procedures performed in Germany increased from 2009 to 2020 with a concomitant anti-proportional decrease in the case-fatality. Our findings may help to draw more attention to predictors of in-hospital case fatality in patients hospitalized for CTO recanalization.Graphical abstract

Association of thyroid peroxidase antibody with the RNF213 p.R4810K variant in ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack
RNF213 is a susceptibility gene for moyamoya disease and vasospastic angina, with a second hit considered necessary for their development. Elevated thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) levels have been observed in both diseases, suggesting a possible role of TPO-Ab as a second hit for developing RNF213-related vasculopathy. We investigated the association of TPO-Ab levels with RNF213-related ischemic stroke (IS)/transient ischemic attack (TIA), other than moyamoya disease.

Is Hypertension Diagnostic Testing and Diagnosis Associated with Psychological Distress?
CONCLUSIONS: The hypertension diagnostic process did not lead to short-term or intermediate-term changes in self-reported HRQOL. However, BP-related worry increased short-term and persisted at 6 months among individuals with a new hypertension diagnosis. Results warrant validation in more representative populations and additional exploration of the impacts of this worry on psychological well-being and hypertension control.PMID:37688515 | DOI:10.1093/ajh/hpad083

Genetic Architecture of Ischaemic Strokes after COVID-19 Shows Similarities with Large Vessel Strokes
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Aug 30;24(17):13452. doi: 10.3390/ijms241713452.ABSTRACTWe aimed to analyse whether patients with ischaemic stroke (IS) occurring within eight days after the onset of COVID-19 (IS-COV) are associated with a specific aetiology of IS. We used SUPERGNOVA to identify genome regions that correlate between the IS-COV cohort (73 IS-COV cases vs. 701 population controls) and different aetiological subtypes. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for each subtype were generated and tested in the IS-COV cohort using PRSice-2 and PLINK to find genetic associations. Both analyses used the IS-COV cohort and GWAS from MEGASTRO...

Antiplatelet Effects of Selected Xanthine-Based Adenosine A < sub > 2A < /sub > and A < sub > 2B < /sub > Receptor Antagonists Determined in Rat Blood
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Aug 29;24(17):13378. doi: 10.3390/ijms241713378.ABSTRACTThe platelet aggregation inhibitory activity of selected xanthine-based adenosine A2A and A2B receptor antagonists was investigated, and attempts were made to explain the observed effects. The selective A2B receptor antagonist PSB-603 and the A2A receptor antagonist TB-42 inhibited platelet aggregation induced by collagen or ADP. In addition to adenosine receptor blockade, the compounds were found to act as moderately potent non-selective inhibitors of phosphodiesterases (PDEs). TB-42 showed the highest inhibitory activity against PDE3A along with ...

Blocking interleukin-6 Trans-Signaling in AF: Promises and Challenges
Atrial fibrillation (AF) stands as the most prevalent cardiovascular disease, posing significant risks of stroke, heart failure, and other complications that contribute to morbidity and mortality. While traditionally research on AF has primarily focused on electrophysiological components like ionic currents and the Ca2+ handling system, treatment strategies have mainly revolved around the rate-limiting beta-blockers and Ca2+ channel blockers, or rhythm-control methods such as cardioversion, antiarrhythmics, and catheter ablation.
