Methylxanthine derivatives promote autophagy in gastric cancer cells targeting PTEN
This study investigated the impacts of caffeine and theophylline on gastric cancer cell apoptosis and autophagy using a gastric cancer cell line (MGC-803) and a nude mouse model. Peritumoural and tumour tissues were collected from five patients diagnosed with gastric carcinoma who underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy at our hospital. Autophagy was suppressed in gastric cancer tumour tissue compared with peritumoural tissue. In vitro, both caffeine and theophylline effectively suppressed MGC-803 cell proliferation and migration and induced autophagy. To assess the involvement of PTEN in caffeine-mediated and theophyll...

miR-146a and miR-146b in the diagnosis and prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma.
Authors: Qiu Z, Li H, Wang J, Sun C Abstract The present study investigated the relationship between the expression of miR-146a and miR‑146b with the occurrence and prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Experiments in vitro were also used to explore the effect of the knocked down expression of the miRNAs on growth and migration of papillary thyroid carcinoma cells. A total of 73 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma admitted to Yidu Central Hospital of Weifang from September 2013 to September 2015 were enrolled in the study. Carcinoma samples were obtained from each patient, and adjacent tissues were use...

Expression of G Protein-coupled Receptor 56 Is an Unfavorable Prognostic Factor in Osteosarcoma Patients.
This study aimed at figuring out whether expression of the GPR56 was associated with clinicopathological features of osteosarcoma. Eighty-nine patients who received osteosarcoma operation between March 2004 and February 2011 in Linyi People's Hospital were recruited. Immunohistochemical staining (IHC) was carried out to identify the expression of GPR56 in those osteosarcoma tissues, and our cohort was divided into higher-expression group and lower-expression group according to the cut-off of IHC score. Expression of GPR56 in osteosarcoma tissues was correlated with the TNM stage and overall survival. Univariate and multiva...

Loss of Runt-related transcription factor 3 induces resistance to 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin in hepatocellular carcinoma.
Authors: Kataoka J, Shiraha H, Horiguchi S, Sawahara H, Uchida D, Nagahara T, Iwamuro M, Morimoto H, Takeuchi Y, Kuwaki K, Onishi H, Nakamura S, Takaki A, Nouso K, Yagi T, Yamamoto K, Okada H Abstract Runt-related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) is known to function as a tumor suppressor in gastric cancer and other types of cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its role has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the role of RUNX3 in HCC. We used the human HCC cell lines Hep3B, Huh7 and HLF; RUNX3 cDNA was introduced into Hep3B and Huh7 cells, which were negative f...

Expression of survivin in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland and the effect of intervention with arsenic trioxide in vitro.
Authors: Pan Y, Xing Y, Wang H Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of survivin in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland (LGACC) and the effect of arsenic trioxide (As2O3) intervention in vitro. In total, 13 patients with LGACC were recruited from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University between 2007 and 2012. The patients were divided into different groups, namely tumor-node-metastasis (TNM)1-2 and TNM3-4, according to the TNM classification. A total of eight samples were included in the TNM1-2 group, while five samples were included in the TNM3-4 group. In addition, six patients t...

Overexpression of WWP1 Promotes tumorigenesis and predicts unfavorable prognosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
Authors: Zhang XF, Chao J, Pan QZ, Pan K, Weng DS, Wang QJ, Zhao JJ, He J, Liu Q, Jiang SS, Chen CL, Zhang HX, Xia JC Abstract WW domain-containing E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1 (WWP1) has been speculated to play important roles in the development of several kinds of cancers. However, the role of WWP1 in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is not clear. In the present study, we investigated the expression and prognostic role of WWP1 in primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using cell lines and 149 archived HCC samples. Correlation between the functions of WWP1 in HCC was also explored. We used human HCC cell lines (BEL-...

Expression and prognostic role of ubiquitination factor E4B in primary hepatocellular carcinoma
Ubiquitination factor E4B (UBE4B) has been speculated to have contradictory functions upon tumorigenesis as an oncogene or tumor suppressor in different types of cancers. We investigated the expression and prognostic role of UBE4B in primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using cell lines and 149 archived HCC samples. Correlation between the functions of UBE4B in HCC was also explored. We used human HCC cell lines (HepG2, Hep3B, SK‐Hep1, Huh7, SMMC‐7721, BEL‐7402) and a normal hepatocyte cell line (LO2) along with HCC samples from patients who had undergone resection for HCC previously at our hospital. A battery of m...

Abstract 596: DKK3 expression and its function in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
In this study, 90 cases of HNSCC tissue samples, which were obtained from Okayama University hospital with written informed consent, for immunohistochemistry to examine DKK3 protein expression. The protein expression status was scored as positive or negative. Pearson's Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to evaluate the correlation between the DKK3 protein expression and clinicopathological characteristics. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to determine the survival analysis. For functional analyses, HNSCC-derived cells were used. Gastric and colorectal cancer cell lines were also used for comparison. DKK3 ...
