Who are the vulnerable lung cancer patients at risk for not receiving first-line curative or palliative treatment?
CONCLUSIONS: Several factors are associated with not receiving guideline-recommended NSCLC treatment with age, performance status, comorbidity and stage being most predictive of no treatment receipt. Efforts should be made to develop support for vulnerable lung cancer patients to improve adherence to optimal first-line therapy.PMID:37656828 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2252581

Pelvic insufficiency fractures and pelvic bone metastases after neoadjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy for rectal cancer
Conclusion: PIFs are a relatively common late complication of neoadjuvant (C)RT for rectal cancer but are often missed or misdiagnosed as pelvic bone metastases. The differentiation of PIFs from pelvic bone metastases is important because of a different treatment and disease outcome.PMID:37656773 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2252168

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Ampullary Carcinoma
CONCLUSION: The current state of the evidence on the treatment of ampullary carcinoma is poor. Therapeutic decisions should be discussed in an interdisciplinary tumor board and should, in our opinion, take the histological subtype into account.PMID:37656482 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2023.0195

Endoluminal radiofrequency ablation in patients with malignant biliary obstruction: a randomised trial
CONCLUSION: A combination of endoluminal RFA and stenting was not superior to stenting alone in prolonging survival or improving stent patency in patients with malignant biliary obstruction.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03166436.PMID:37652677 | DOI:10.1136/gutjnl-2023-329700

The Efficacy of Hospice-In-Place Care Versus Traditional Inpatient Care
Discussion: Quantitative findings of this study showed improved satisfaction but were unable to show a significant difference in satisfaction with hospice-in-place compared to traditional care. Questionnaire results suggest that both types of care yield high satisfaction scores and are successfully supporting patients and families. The conceptual framework also adds to the understanding of end-of-life experiences at VUMC.PMID:37651687 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231199722

Impact of short-course palliative radiotherapy on pancreatic cancer-related pain: Prospective phase II non-randomized PAINPANC trial
CONCLUSIONS: Short-course palliative radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer-related pain was associated with rapid, clinically relevant reduction in pain severity, and clinically relevant improvement in global QoL, with mostly mild toxicity.PMID:37647972 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2023.08.055

Is cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy still beneficial in patients diagnosed with colorectal peritoneal metastasis who underwent palliative chemotherapy?
CONCLUSION: CRS and HIPEC could be a treatment option for a carefully selected CPM patients performed by experienced surgeons. Overall survival of 41.50 months in palliative group compared to 16.8 months from conventional systemic CTx supports CRS and HIPEC even in palliative patients.PMID:37648541 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2023.08.135
