Renal aspergillosis after COVID ‐19‐associated pulmonary aspergillosis: A case report
Key Clinical MessageRenal aspergillosis is a rare condition and this case the first case of Renal aspergillosis reported after COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis. Renal symptoms should arise clinical suspicion to renal involvement that happened as a result of hematogenous spreading of pulmonary aspergillosis.AbstractSecondary fungal infections are among the most significant complications that can arise after COVID-19 and have the potential to lead to a high rate of morbidity and mortality. As COVID-19 primarily involves the airway, the majority of fungal infections reported have been related to the respiratory sys...

Surgical treatment of < em > Candida albicans < /em > spondylodiscitis
CONCLUSION: In summary, evaluation for fungal infection is essential in all cases of unexplained spinal infection in immunocompromised patients, regardless of presentation. If the antifungal treatment proves ineffective, a surgical approach is typically employed for the management of fungal spondylodiscitis. Our report details a successful case of fungal spondylodiscitis treated with a surgical approach and highlights the potential for a fungal infection to be a causative factor in noncompressive myelopathy, which may be sometimes mistaken for radiation myelitis.PMID:37663715 | PMC:PMC10473295 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001114

Ileus induced by the combination of vinca alkaloids and posaconazole in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a case report and literature review
J Int Med Res. 2023 Aug;51(8):3000605231193823. doi: 10.1177/03000605231193823.ABSTRACTVinca alkaloid (VA)-induced ileus, a rare but severe autonomic neuropathy, can be enhanced by concomitant use of antifungal triazole agents. We herein present a case of VA-induced ileus in a 17-year-old girl who was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. On day 1, the patient received cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and methylprednisolone. On day 2, she began treatment with posaconazole oral suspension at 200 mg three times daily for prophylaxis against invasive fungal infection. On day 5, she began induction therapy consisti...

Dermatological Issues Among Individuals Receiving Palliative Care - A Review
Am J Hosp Palliat Care. 2023 Aug 25:10499091231198752. doi: 10.1177/10499091231198752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkin disorders among individuals receiving palliative care may be associated with the primary condition or underlying comorbidities and patients may experience pruritus, discomfort or pain. Common conditions include xerosis, pressure ulcers, intertrigo, superficial fungal infections, telogen effluvium, pruritus, herpes zoster, eczematous disorders and edema. During end-of-life care, there is reduced skin perfusion and metabolism hence leading to susceptibility to infection, pressure and injury. Other factors...

Urgent Care data shows Valley fever season has begun in Arizona
To increase the chances of receiving proper care, people with symptoms of pneumonia should ask to be tested for Valley fever. Today College of Medicine – Tucsonvalley-fever-dust-storm-crop.jpg Valley fever is caused by the fungus coccidioides, which grows in soils in areas with low rainfall, high summer temperatures and moderate winter temperatures. The fungal spores become airborne when the soil is disturbed by winds, construction, farming and other activities.HealthCollege of Medicine - TucsonDeterminationExpertsValley fever Media contact(s)Anna Christensen College of Medicine – Tucsonachristensen@arizona.edu5...

Senso-immunology: The Emerging Connection between Pain and Immunity
Keio J Med. 2023 Jul 15. doi: 10.2302/kjm.2022-0037-IR. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe sensory and immune systems have been studied independently for a long time, whereas the interaction between the two has received little attention. We have carried out research to understand the interaction between the sensory and immune systems and have found that inflammation and bone destruction caused by fungal infection are suppressed by nociceptors. Furthermore, we have elucidated the molecular mechanism whereby fungal receptors are expressed on nociceptors and skin epithelium, how they cooperate to generate fungal pain, and how ...
