The Impacts of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation from Same Sex on the Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis Patients
Pol J Microbiol. 2023 Sep 20;72(3):247-268. doi: 10.33073/pjm-2023-025. eCollection 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTWe aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from the same sex on ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. A total of 272 UC patients were selected in the prospective clinical study, which incorporated four distinct groups, each comprising male and female patients, who were either receiving FMT or placebo, respectively. FMT was performed by sending the gut microbiota of healthy female or male adolescents to the same gender patients via gastroscope three times (one time/three weeks), and a p...

Inhibition of COX-2 signaling favors E. coli during urinary tract infection
To avoid the overuse of antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acting via cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition, have been used to reduce pain and as an alternative treatment for uncomplicated ...

Retrospective Analysis of the Clinical Features and Pregnancy Outcomes in 124 Pregnant Patients with Non-Obstetric Acute Abdomen
CONCLUSION: Non-obstetric AAD during pregnancy manifests clinically as nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, elevated body temperature, and leukocytes, all of which have pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant patients with non-obstetric AAD should be diagnosed according to their clinical manifestations, physical examinations, and relevant imaging examinations, and appropriate treatment modalities should be selected to achieve a better pregnancy outcome and ensure the safety of the mother and baby during the clinical diagnosis and treatment process. This study underscores the need for prompt and accurate diagnosis in pregnant patients...

Concurrent emphysematous cystitis and emphysematous pyelonephritis in a patient with extrarenal pelvis
We report co-occurrence of emphysematous cystitis and emphysematous pyelonephritis (EC/EPN) in a 64-year-old female with poor-controlled diabetes mellitus (DM) that presented with flank pain, fever, and hematuria that turned out to have a bilateral extrarenal pelvis. On examination, she was feverish, and the costovertebral angle was tender. By considering herhemoglobin A1C, her DM was out of control. Inflammatory markers elevated. Renal function tests were impaired. Urine culture was positive for extended-spectrum beta-lactamaseEscherichia coli. Computed tomography scans (CT) confirmed the presence of air in the bladder an...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6324: Biogenic Nanoparticles Silver and Copper and Their Composites Derived from Marine Alga Ulva lactuca: Insight into the Characterizations, Antibacterial Activity, and Anti-Biofilm Formation
This study is focused on biogenic silver and copper nanoparticles and their composites (UL/Ag2 O-NPS, Ul/CuO-NPs, and Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs) produced by the marine green alga Ulva lactuca. The characterization of biogenic nanoparticles UL/Ag2 O-NPS and Ul/CuO-NPs and their composites Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs has been accomplished by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and the zeta potential. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) experiments were conducted to prove antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anti-biofilm. The FTIR spectroscopy results indicate the exiti...

Nephrectomy for xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis —a not-so-simple solution
ConclusionsXGP is a difficult and complex condition to treat. All patients in this series presented with infection or associated sequelae thereof. Complex XGP cases therefore often require open nephrectomy and have high rates of postoperative complications. Careful consideration of antibiotic and operative intervention is therefore essential to ensure the best outcome for these patients.

What Are Underlying Risk Factors for Liver Abscesses?
This study specific excluded patients with ALA or candidemia. LA treatment is usually antibiotics and less invasive surgical techniques such as aspiration or percutaneous catheter drainage, but other treatment including resection is sometimes needed Overall mortality from LA has decreased from 15-40% to as low as 0.8% in the pediatric populations as noted above. Learning Point LA can occur solely because of exposure to infectious organisms but is also commonly associated with hepatobiliary pathology as well. In Northern India study, the “[m]ajority of …children had no predisposing factors for development of LA ...

Exposure to okadaic acid could disrupt the colonic microenvironment in rats
In this study, we investigated the changes that occurred in the epithelial microenvironment following OA exposure, including the epithelial barrier and gut bacteria. We found that impaired epithelial cell junctions, mucus layer destruction, cytoskeletal remodeling, and increased bacterial invasion occurred in colon of rats after OA exposure. At the same time, the gut bacteria decreased in the abundance of beneficial bacteria and increased in the abundance of pathogenic bacteria, and there was a significant negative correlation between the abundance of pathogenic bacteria represented by Escherichia/Shigella and animal body ...
