On the noxious black Amazonian scorpion, Tityus obscurus (Scorpiones, Buthidae): Taxonomic notes, biology, medical importance and envenoming treatment
Toxicon. 2023 Apr 11:107125. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107125. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTityus obscurus has caused mild, moderate and severe accidents of medical relevance in the eastern Brazilian Amazon and French Guiana. Tityus obscurus has sexual dimorphism although males and females have uniform black coloration. In the Amazon, one of the habitats of this scorpion is seasonally flooded forests (igapós and várzeas). However, most stings occur in terra firme forest areas (non-flooded region), where most rural communities are located. Adults and children stung by T. obscurus may experience an "electric shock" sen...

Use and perceived effectiveness of non-pharmacological home remedies for digestive symptoms: a questionnaire-based survey among primary care patients
CONCLUSION: Our data could be useful to PCPs interested in proposing NPHRs to their patients suffering from digestive disorders, and more generally to all PCPs interested in learning more about patients' use of NPHRs in primary care.PMID:37052171 | DOI:10.1093/fampra/cmad046

Cohort Event Monitoring of Adverse Reactions to COVID-19 Vaccines in Seven European Countries: Pooled Results on First Dose
ConclusionThis large-scale prospective study of COVID-19 vaccine recipients showed, for all the studied vaccines, a high frequency of systemic reactions, related to the immunogenic response, and local reactions at the injection site, while serious reactions or AESIs were uncommon, consistent with those reported on product labels. This study demonstrated the feasibility of setting up and conducting cohort event monitoring across multiple European countries to collect safety data on novel vaccines that are rolled out at scale in populations which may not have been included in pivotal trials.

Trump As Catalyst For Legal and Cultural Reform
BY MIKE MAGEE Former President Donald Trump’s indictment this morning reinforces most Americans’ belief that “No man is above the law.” But few of us have taken the time to explore what that statement means when it comes to building a healthy nation, and why we believe it. How do you create a healthy nation?  This is at once a very simple and a very complex question. It is at the heart of successful and failed nation building.  It applies equally to a self-assessment of our approach to rebuilding Germany and Japan as part of the Marshall Plan after WW II, and to our own struggl...

Veterans With Low Back Pain: High Impact Chronic Pain Rates From Primary Care Clinics
High impact chronic pain (HICP) is a metric of interest because it can be indicative of disability and psychologic distress. HICP rates have been described for the general population, but less is known about rates in primary care settings. The purpose of this abstract is to describe HICP rates for a sample of Veterans seeking care for low back pain. We also report how HICP rates vary based on age, sex, race, ethnicity, and clinic. Data were collected from the electronic health record as part of the ongoing AIM-Back pragmatic clinical trial.

Assessing Referral Bias In An Embedded Pragmatic Cluster Randomized Trial For Veterans With Low Back Pain
The objectives of this study were to characterize race, gender and age of patients referred by primary care providers to clinical pathways in AIM-BACK, an embedded pragmatic cluster randomized trial, and to compare demographic characteristics of referred patients to the general population of low back pain (LBP) patients at participating AIM-BACK clinics. Clinics randomized in August 2020 (n=10) having at least 50 patients referred to a clinical pathway through 3/31/2022 were included (n=8 clinics, 821 referrals).

COVID-19 (Omicron strain) hospital admissions from a virtual ward - who required further care?
CONCLUSIONS: Few patients required admission from the virtual ward in the setting of the Omicron variant (BA.1, BA.2) as a direct result of COVID-19 disease and virtual ward care. Shortness of breath and chest pain were the most common symptoms driving further clinical care.PMID:36991540 | PMC:PMC10040950 | DOI:10.1111/irv.13108
