Assessing Referral Bias In An Embedded Pragmatic Cluster Randomized Trial For Veterans With Low Back Pain

The objectives of this study were to characterize race, gender and age of patients referred by primary care providers to clinical pathways in AIM-BACK, an embedded pragmatic cluster randomized trial, and to compare demographic characteristics of referred patients to the general population of low back pain (LBP) patients at participating AIM-BACK clinics. Clinics randomized in August 2020 (n=10) having at least 50 patients referred to a clinical pathway through 3/31/2022 were included (n=8 clinics, 821 referrals).
