Bullous cellulitis as an extraordinary manifestation of a Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa infection
We describe a case of a 63-year-old Chinese woman with multiple medical comorbidities on corticosteroid therapy who developed fever and a painful swelling on her left leg after being pricked by a branch while gardening. There was no abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea. A diagnosis of bullous cellulitis was made clinically, and blood was sent for bacteriological culture. A beta-hemolytic commashaped gram-negative bacillus was isolated from the blood. It was also oxidase-positive and produced an acid/alkaline (A/K) reaction on triple sugar iron agar. It was identified biochemically as Vibrio cholerae. After additional testi...

Duration and dosing of systemic corticosteroids for acute exacerbation of COPD, protocol for a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized trials and cohort studies
DiscussionsTo our knowledge, this represents an updated and most comprehensive review of the literature comparing different duration and dosing regimen of corticosteroid treatments in AECOPD, as we will include both RCTs and observational studies without date or language restrictions. We aim to validate prior meta-analyses and study findings on the efficacy of short duration corticosteroid therapy over longer treatments and to inform future research directions in dosing regimens.

The diagnosis and Management of HIV Associated Acquired Hemophilia A: A Case Series From Durban, South Africa
CONCLUSION: In view of the prevalence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, there is a possibility that AHA is under-diagnosed in our setting. The clinician and the laboratory have a combined critical role in identifying patients with AHA as the investigation of a prolonged APTT is mandatory. There are challenges in managing AHA patients in a resource-constrained setting.PMID:37646157 | PMC:PMC10467197 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231194970

Corticosteroid implants for chronic non-infectious uveitis
CONCLUSIONS: Our confidence is limited that local corticosteroid implants are superior to sham therapy or standard-of-care therapy in reducing the risk of uveitis recurrence. We demonstrated different effectiveness on BCVA relative to comparators in people with non-infectious uveitis. Nevertheless, the evidence suggests that these implants may increase the risk of cataract progression and IOP elevation, which will require interventions over time. To better understand the efficacy and safety profiles of corticosteroid implants, we need future trials that examine implants of different doses, used for different durations. The...

An Overview of Nanotechnological Approaches for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Allergic Illness
Curr Pharm Des. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.2174/1381612829666230828104015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAllergies are a major health issue. Allergen avoidance, antihistamines, and corticosteroids do not treat the pathology's causes, therefore long-term therapy is essential. Long-term allergen-specific immunotherapy builds immune tolerance to the allergen. Unfortunately, immunotherapies for all allergens are not available, and adverse reactions during therapy, especially in severely allergic persons, remain a worry. In this regard, cell and bio- or nanomaterial-based allergy treatments are promising. This overview covers the mos...

Perception of burden of oral and inhaled corticosteroid adverse effects on asthma-specific quality of life
CONCLUSION: The most burdensome AEs may not be the AEs that would cause patients to stop therapy. Furthermore, qualitative focus groups suggest a psychosocial burden associated with ICS, which needs further investigation.PMID:37643678 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.08.595

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: A case report and literature review
Clin Case Rep. 2023 Aug 25;11(9):e7819. doi: 10.1002/ccr3.7819. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTKEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a challenging chronic inflammatory disease in diagnosis with unknown etiology. Although the most appropriate treatment protocol has not yet been identified, prednisolone was used in our patient as an effective and practical choice in the treatment of IGM.ABSTRACT: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the breast and mimics disorders such as breast cancer and breast abscess. Due to the uncommon of this disease, there is no definit...
