Nonpharmacological treatment measures, rehabilitation services and membership in patient support groups in axial spondylarthritis (The ATTENTUS axSpA study)
CONCLUSION: Treatment options and resources were often utilized to a small extent and/or in low intensity by axSpA patients, which could be a possible explanation for persisting restrictions of participation. Membership in a PSG was associated with an increased utilization of NPTM and RS.PMID:37725129 | DOI:10.1007/s00393-023-01410-w

Overcoming the Challenges in the Development and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology: A Comprehensive Review of Solutions Beyond Supervised Learning
Korean J Radiol. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.3348/kjr.2023.0393. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTArtificial intelligence (AI) in radiology is a rapidly developing field with several prospective clinical studies demonstrating its benefits in clinical practice. In 2022, the Korean Society of Radiology held a forum to discuss the challenges and drawbacks in AI development and implementation. Various barriers hinder the successful application and widespread adoption of AI in radiology, such as limited annotated data, data privacy and security, data heterogeneity, imbalanced data, model interpretability, overfitting, and integration wit...

Learning Language, Un/Learning Empathy in Medical School
This article considers the ways in which empathy for patients and related solidarity with communities may be trained out of medical students during medical school. The article focuses especially on the pre-clinical years of medical school, those that begin with orientation and initiation events such as the White Coat Ceremony. The ethnographic data for the article come from field notes and recordings from my own medical training as well as hundreds of hours of observant participation and interviews with medical students over the past several years. Exploring the framework of language socialization, I argue that learning th...

Role of registered dietitians in nasoenteric feeding tube placement
Nutr Clin Pract. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1002/ncp.11071. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProvision of enteral nutrition (EN) in hospitalized patients is an integral part of clinical care. For various reasons, including but not limited to delayed enteral access placement and EN initiation, it is becoming more prevalent for registered dietitians (RDs) to place feeding tubes in various clinical settings. Although numerous RDs have expanded their practice by learning this skill, many remain hesitant about adding feeding tube placement to their scope of responsibilities. Feeding tube placement is within RDs' scope of practice. The r...

Aortic Annulus Detection Based on Deep Learning for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Using Cardiac Computed Tomography
CONCLUSION: Our deep learning framework was feasible to detect the 3D complex structure of the aortic annulus plane using cardiac CT for TAVR. The performance of our algorithms was higher than other convolutional neural networks.PMID:37724499 | PMC:PMC10506901 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e306

Smell and Taste Disorders in Primary Care
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):240-248.ABSTRACTDisorders of smell and taste are reported by approximately one-fifth of people 40 years and older, and one-third of people 80 years and older. These disorders affect quality of life and the ability to identify smoke and toxins. Smell and taste disorders can be early signs of dementia or Parkinson disease and are associated with increased mortality. Dysfunction may be apparent or may develop insidiously. Screening questionnaires are available, but many patients are unaware of their disorder. Most smell and taste disorders are due to sinonasal disease but also could be caused...

Impact of a Residency Family Systems Curriculum on the Postresidency Practice of Family Physicians
Conclusions: More than half the respondents found all elements of the curriculum helpful in their clinical practice, especially in the areas of caring for patients and maintaining empathy. The responses will be used as a baseline for comparison to improve the training. Continued research, perhaps in the form of randomized controlled trials using several residencies, could help in developing elements for more standardized curriculum in family-oriented care training.PMID:37725775 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.411218

Novel Performance Rating Instruments for Gynecological Procedures in Primary Care: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: We developed novel performance rating instruments for four gynecological procedures and provided preliminary validity evidence for their use for formative feedback in a simulation setting. This pilot study suggests that these instruments may facilitate the training and documentation of family medicine trainees' skills in gynecological procedures.PMID:37725774 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.261011

Resident Involvement in Curricular and Clinical Practice Change and Satisfaction With Training According to Length of Training in Family Medicine
CONCLUSIONS: Four-year residents were involved in a greater number of quality improvement projects and had a more diverse profile of involvement than those in 3-year residency programs. Involvement in practice and curricular change and the learning environment were associated with greater levels of resident satisfaction with training in both 3-year and 4-year programs.PMID:37725772 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.346131

Assessing Educational and Attitudinal Outcomes of a Student Learner Experience Focused on Homelessness
CONCLUSIONS: Improvements from time point 1 to 2 demonstrated the value of didactic learning, while further improvements from time point 2 to 3 demonstrated the added benefit of hands-on experiential learning. Our study illustrates the potential educational benefits that a PNP provides to medical students who may encounter or care for this population during their careers.PMID:37725769 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.112960

Women's experiences of primary dysmenorrhea symptoms: a systematic review of qualitative evidence and meta-aggregation
Women Health. 2023 Sep 14;63(8):658-668. doi: 10.1080/03630242.2023.2255289. Epub 2023 Sep 19.ABSTRACTPrimary dysmenorrhea (PD) has a significant impact on women's lives, especially among young women who miss school and work due to painful periods. Experiences and how women manage PD have been explored to some extent, but the evidence has not been systematically collated and reviewed to allow health professionals to better understand women's experiences of and perceptions about PD. Hence, we aim to synthesize the qualitative evidence related to women's experiences of PD and associated symptoms. For this purpose, seven data...
