Recent Patents of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Allergic Rhinitis.
Authors: Hon KL, Fung CK, Leung AK, Lam HS, Lee SL Abstract Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common respiratory disease affecting both adults and children worldwide. Affected patients may experience nasal congestion/stuffiness, rhinorrhea (anterior and/or posterior), nasal/nasopharyngeal itching and sneezing. Allergen avoidance is the principal step in the management. Nasal saline irrigation to remove allergen (s) in the nose is a useful adjunctive therapy in the management of moderate to severe AR. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life may be achieved in the majority of patients with appropriate pharmacothera...

Effect of acupuncture on house dust mite specific IgE, substance P, and symptoms in persistent allergic rhinitis.
CONCLUSION: Acupuncture modulated mucosal immune response in the upper airway in adults with persistent allergic rhinitis. This modulation appears to be associated with down-regulation of allergen specific IgE for house dust mite, which this study is the first to report. Improvements in nasal itch, eye itch, and sneezing after acupuncture are suggestive of down-regulation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1. A Food Allergy Study Utilizing the EAV Acupuncture Technique
Abstract Six diagnostic measures were performed on 30 volunteers. Five of the six diagnostic measures are currently utilized procedures for allergy, namely history and food challenge, skin, RAST, and IgE tests. The sixth and new method is based upon Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV). Results showed that the EAV test evidences a high degree of compatibility with the other five, particularly the food challenge test. As a new, noninvasive but sensitive test, it was found to be quite promising.
