IJERPH, Vol. 15, Pages 2043: The Epidemiology of Food Allergy in the Global Context
ang There is a lack of high-quality evidence based on the gold standard of oral food challenges to determine food allergy prevalence. Nevertheless, studies using surrogate measures of food allergy, such as health service utilization and clinical history, together with allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE), provide compelling data that the prevalence of food allergy is increasing in both Western and developing countries. In Western countries, challenge-diagnosed food allergy has been reported to be as high as 10%, with the greatest prevalence noted among younger children. There is also growing evidence of increasing...

Climate Change and Future Pollen Allergy in Europe
Conclusions: Our quantitative estimates indicate that ragweed pollen allergy will become a common health problem across Europe, expanding into areas where it is currently uncommon. Control of ragweed spread may be an important adaptation strategy in response to climate change. This EHP Advance Publication article has been peer-reviewed, revised, and accepted for publication. Early-life exposure to air pollution associated with food allergy in children: Implications for 'one allergy' concept
CONCLUSION: Early-life exposure to high levels of outdoor and indoor air pollution in China due to the rapid economic growth and fast urbanization in the past decades may contribute to the rapid increase of food allergy (FA) in children. Our study indicates that, in addition to gut and skin, airway may be a new route of food sensitization. Air pollution leads to the first and second waves of allergy epidemics, suggesting a concept of 'one allergy' disease.PMID:36347392 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2022.114713

Diagnosis of hymenoptera venom allergy - with special emphasis on honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom allergy.
Abstract Hymenoptera stings occur very frequently and usually are not dangerous. The normal reaction after sting includes such symptoms as: mild swelling, redness and pain lasting from several minutes to several hours. In contrast, in people with allergy to insect venom, severe local reactions and systemic symptoms, including anaphylactic shock, may occur. Diagnostic tests should be performed in persons who experience systemic symptoms after a sting. The basic tests used in the diagnosis of allergy to hymenoptera venom are skin tests and detection of venom-specific IgE antibodies. If it is not possible to make a d...

Early Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution, Respiratory Symptoms at 4 Years of Age, and Potential Effect Modification by Parental Allergy, Stressful Family Events, and Gender: A Prospective Follow-up Study of the PARIS Birth Cohort
Conclusions: This study supports the hypothesis that all preschool children are not equal regarding TRAP health effects. Parental history of allergy, ‘stressful’ family events, and male gender may increase their susceptibility to adverse respiratory effects of early TRAP exposure. Relationships between acrylamide and glycidamide hemoglobin adduct levels and allergy-related outcomes in general US population, NHANES 2005-2006.
CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated significant associations between HbAA and HbGA levels and the likelihoods of allergy-related outcomes in the general US population, depending on age, gender and smoke exposure status. These findings suggested potential public health concerns for the widespread exposure to acrylamide. PMID: 28325597 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impacts of long-term ragweed pollen load and other potential risk factors on ragweed pollen allergy among schoolchildren in Hungary.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher ragweed pollen exposure was not found to be associated with higher risk of ragweed allergy. PMID: 29936806 [PubMed - in process]

Importance of food allergy and food intolerance in allergic multimorbidity.
CONCLUSIONS: Food allergy or food intolerance was more common in subjects with allergic multimorbidity than in subjects diagnosed with one allergic disease or those free of allergic diseases. PMID: 32955224 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of contact allergy in children suffering from atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and in healthy controls.
CONCLUSIONS: The statistically significant positive results in the highest proportion of patch tests in the youngest age subpopulation of children with atopic dermatitis, and detection of contact allergy most commonly in the youngest subgroup of healthy children, may suggest nonspecifically positive results associated with the immaturity of the epidermal barrier during the first years of life. Concentrations of contact allergens included in current pediatric sets of patch tests seems to be too high and should be verified. PMID: 23540212 [PubMed - in process]

The associations between daily spring pollen counts, over-the-counter allergy medication sales, and asthma syndrome emergency department visits in New York City, 2002-2012
Conclusions: Tree pollen peaking in mid-spring exhibit substantive impacts on allergy, and asthma exacerbations, particularly in children. Given the narrow time window of these pollen peak occurrences, public health and clinical approaches to anticipate and reduce allergy/asthma exacerbation should be developed.

Pollen allergy and health behavior: patients trivializing their disease
AbstractAllergies are increasing in prevalence worldwide, with socioeconomic impacts and effects on quality of life. The aim of this study was to explore the health behavior and the utilization of different treatment options via questionnaires and to investigate for relationships of the above with socioeconomic factors. This cross-sectional survey was carried out among pollen allergic subjects in 2016, using questionnaires. A total of 679 allergics participated in the study (61.2% females). Their average age was 26.8  ± 8.8 years. Their symptom severity was 6.1 ± 1.9, measured on a 10-step scale and symptoms las...

Asteraceae species as potential environmental factors of allergy.
In this study, we tried to reveal the allergenic potential of several Asteraceae species. The Asteraceae-related allergy symptoms involve eczema, hay fever, asthma, or even anaphylaxis. Furthermore, the evidence of severe cross-reactivity with food and pollen allergens (PFS) in patients sensitive to Asteraceae allergens have been announced. Further identification and characterization of secondary metabolites and possible allergens in Asteraceae are necessary for the better understanding of Asteraceae-related immune response. The Asteraceae allergy screening panel (the SL mix and the Compositae mix of five plant species) is...

Household airborne endotoxin associated with asthma and allergy in elementary school-age children: a case-control study in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Abstract To evaluate the association between the presence of asthma and allergy, and airborne endotoxin in homes of school-age children in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, with a case-control study design by matching the age and class exposure. Data collection of home visits included an interviewer-administered questionnaire and air sampling of participants' homes for endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi, as well as temperature and relative humidity measurements. Endotoxin was detected in all air samples with a median value of 0.67 EU m-3. In the adjusted logistic regression model, household airborne endotoxin was associated w...
