Drug allergy is associated with the development of extraintestinal manifestations in patients with ulcerative colitis.
Authors: Toledo-Maurino JJ Abstract Summary: Drug allergies are developed by antibody or cell-mediated reactions as immunologic mechanisms. It has been demonstrated that hypersensitivity reaction to certain allergens may play a role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) focused on food allergies. A total of 256 patients with UC were divided in two groups: 203 patients with active UC and 53 in remission UC were included in the present study. In the present study we found that 11.7% had allergy to at least one drug distributed. The most frequent drug-allergies were sulfonamides in 2.8% and penicilli...

Autoantibodies in chronic idiopathic urticaria and nonurticarial systemic autoimmune disorders.
CONCLUSION: The CU Index values were elevated in patients with CU and SLE. The presence of these autoantibodies did not correlate with disease activity or presence of thyroid antibodies. Functional autoantibodies may not be specific for chronic idiopathic urticaria, and their role in nonurticarial systemic autoimmune diseases requires further investigation. Association between Endoplasmic Reticulum Aminopeptidase-1 (ERAP-1) and Susceptibility to Ankylosing Spondylitis in Iran.
Abstract Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory arthritis, which affects mainly spine and sacroiliac joints. According to recent studies, ERAP1 is the second most common candidate gene for AS susceptibility after HLA-B27. The aim of this study was to determine the association of ERAP1 gene polymorphisms with AS in Iranian population. The study group comprised 387 Iranian AS patients and 316 healthy controls from Iran. Using Real Time PCR allelic discrimination method, we genotyped four SNPs (rs30187, rs469876, rs13167972 and rs27434) of ERAP1. We found that rs30187 and rs27434 were significantly associated ...

Effect of HLA-B*27 and its Subtypes on Clinical Manifestations and Severity of Ankylosing Spondylitis in Iranian patients.
Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the role of HLA-B*27 and it's subtypes in determining severity and clinical manifestations of ankylosing spondylitis (AS).A total of 163 AS patients were assessed for clinical manifestations and severity using structured questionnaires. HLA-B*27 screening and B*27 sub-typing were performed by PCR.One hundred twenty two patients (74.8%) were B*27 positive. The male to female ratio, peripheral arthritis, steroid use, intense dorsal kyphosis and decrease of cervical slope had a significantly higher frequency in B*27 positive patients compared to B*27 negative ones (p=0.01,...

Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease in Psoriasis: Relation to Inflammation Assessed by the Severity and Duration of Illness.
Conclusion: The findings observed in this study corroborate previous findings in similar studies, thus demonstrating that the prevalence of risk factors for CVDs among patients with psoriasis is greater than in the general population, but that a large proportion of such patients do not undergo treatment for this. We did not find any possible association between the inflammatory process and the genesis of risk factors for CVDs, although the magnitude of this evidence is not strong. These findings serve to alert dermatologists to remain attentive to these factors, among patients with psoriasis. PMID: 24138074 [PubMed - ...

Lack of Association between Single Nucleotide Polymorphism rs10818488 in TRAF1/C5 Region and Rheumatoid Arthritis in Iranian Population.
Abstract The association of rs10818488 SNP located in TRAF1/C5 region with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), has been picked up by genome-wide association studies. Independent studies in different populations revealed inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association of this SNP with RA in Iranian population.A total of 362 cases and 422 healthy controls were recruited in this study. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood and the genotyping was performed by PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism). A set of genotypes was confirmed by sequencing...

Methotrexate-induced Pneumonitis: Heterogeneity of Bronchoalveolar Lavage and Differences between Cancer and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
CONCLUSIONS: In MTX-P, cytological analysis of BAL may disclose up to six different patterns. In MTX-P affecting cancer patients, BAL tends to show the typical features of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, while, in rheumatoid arthritis patients, it is more heterogeneous, with a less intense lymphocytosis, a more pronounced neutrophilia, and a higher CD4/CD8 ratio. These differences could be related to a disparity in baseline pulmonary conditions between the two background diseases, i.e., to the presence of previously healthy lungs in cancer patients, and lungs already involved by the immune-mediated inflammatory processes, of...

Rheumatoid arthritis: an autoimmune disease with female preponderance and cardiovascular risk equivalent to Diabetes Mellitus: Role of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, inflammatory disease with female preponderance, characterized by severe articular and extraarticular manifestations. Cardiovascular (CV) disease in RA usually occurs a decade earlier than age- and sex-matched controls and patients with RA are twice more likely to develop myocardial infarction irrespective of age, history of prior CVD events and traditional CV risk factors. It has been shown that atherosclerotic CV disease in RA shares similarities with CV disease in diabetes mellitus (DM) in terms of clinical presentation and preclinical atherosclerosis. In additio...
