Bradykinin-mediated diseases.
Authors: Kaplan AP Abstract Diseases which have been demonstrated to be caused by increased plasma levels of bradykinin all have angioedema as the common major clinical manifestation. Angioedema due to therapy with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is caused by suppressed bradykinin degradation so that it accumulates. This occurs because ACE metabolizes bradykinin by removal of Phe-Arg from the C-terminus, which inactivates it. By contrast, angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (either hereditary types I and II, or acquired) is caused by bradykinin overproduction. C1 inhibitor inhibits factor XIIa,...

Histopathological patterns indicative of distinct adverse drug reactions.
Authors: Kerl K Abstract Histologically, drug eruptions may present virtually all patterns of inflammation in the skin, including spongiotic, lichenoid and psoriasiform dermatitis as well as vasculitis or panniculitis. Drug reactions may mimic specific skin diseases such as lupus erythematosus, lichen planus or lymphoma. While a single drug may cause a wide range of reaction patterns, no reaction pattern is specific for a certain drug. Nevertheless, some reactions are quite characteristic for certain drugs as for example psoriasiform dermatitis for anti-TNF agents or folliculitis for epidermal growth factor recepto...

Production and Characterization of New Anti-Human CD20 Monoclonal Antibody.
Abstract The B-cell CD20 antigen is one of the most reliable surface targets in immunotherapy of B lymphoma. In this project, we studied the production and characterization of a new monoclonal antibody against chimeric human CD20 extra loops (hCD20 exl). The results showed that clone C12H, IgG2/k isotype reacted with the antigen in ELISA and immunoblot. The Kd value was  found to be 2×10-9M and flow cytometry results showed that 99.9% and 99.7% of the Daudi and Raji cells respectively were stained with C12H monoclonal antibody (mab) but not with Jurkat cell lines. It also effectively competed with Rituximab, thu...

Advances in Understanding the Pathogenesis of Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Lymphoproliferative Disorders.
Abstract Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was discovered 50 years ago  from an african Burkitt lymphoma cell line. EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) are life- threatening diseases, especially in children. In this article, we review EBV-associated LPDs, especially in the area of primary immunodeficiency disease (PID). We searched PubMed for publications with key words including EBV infection, lymphoma, LPDs and PID, and selected the manuscripts written in English that we judged to be relevant to the topic of this review. On the basis of the data in the literature, we grouped the EBV-associated LPDs ...

Lymphoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses: A case series.
CONCLUSION: Sinonasal lymphomas are characterized by meager survival rates, which differ by histopathologic subtype. The diagnosis of sinonasal lymphoma is challenging because symptoms frequently parallel those of chronic rhinosinusitis. Increased awareness of these rare malignancies may improve detection and more timely treatment. Clinical trial registration NCT01332136. PMID: 27657899 [PubMed - in process]

Association of Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain Receptors with Peptic Ulcer and Gastric Cancer.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the expression level of NOD1 and NOD2 on the susceptibility to gastric cancer as well as peptic ulcer in individuals with H. pylori infection. The gene expression levels of these molecules were compared in three groups of non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) as a control group (n=52); peptic ulcer disease (PUD), (n=53); and gastric cancer (GC), (n=39). Relative expression levels of NOD1 in patients with GC were higher than those of NUD and PUD (p<0.001 and P<0.001, respectively). Similarly in case of NOD1, PUD group showed higher level of expression than NUD group (p<0.01). However,...

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis mimics many common conditions: case series and review of literature.
Conclusion. Patients with HLH usually share various non-specific symptoms, such as fever and malaise, with patients across a wide spectrum of conditions: from bacterial sepsis to malignancies. Since early suspicion and diagnosis is critical to prompt therapy and improved mortality, including HLH as a possible cause of fever particularly in patients with prolonged fever of unknown origin and cytopenias will be crucial.
