Principles for Health Information Collection, Sharing, and Use: A Policy Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001173. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe evolution of the electronic health record, combined with advances in data curation and analytic technologies, increasingly enables data sharing and harmonization. Advances in the analysis of health-related and health-proxy information have already accelerated research discoveries and improved patient care. This American Heart Association policy statement discusses how broad data sharing can be an enabling driver of progress by providing data to develop, test, and benchmark innovative methods, scalable insights, and potential new ...

Integrating STEADI for Falls Prevention in Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinics: An Outcomes Evaluation Using the RE-AIM Framework
We described the Implementation process and strategies. Using Electronic Health Records (EHR), we identified Reach, Adoption, and Maintenance of screenings and physical assessments to identify fall risk among older adults.RESULTS: STEADI Implementation strategies included health system mandates, EHR revisions, email instructions, educational sessions and resources, clinical leads and champions, and chart audits. Reach: 76.4% (50,023) had a completed screening, and 44.1% screened at-risk for falls. Adoption: Clinic-level adoption varied, with most performing screenings. Profession-level adoption was highest for physical the...

DICOM ® integrated EEG data: A first clinical implementation of the new DICOM standard for neurophysiology data
CONCLUSIONS: Storing and reviewing EEG data in standardized DICOM format is feasible, facilitated by existing DICOM infrastructure, and therefore allows for vendor independent access to EEG data.SIGNIFICANCE: We report the first implementation of the DICOM neurophysiology standard, thus promoting standardization in the field of neurophysiology as well as data exchange and access to legacy recordings in an interoperable vendor independent format.PMID:37634966 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinph.2023.07.008

Toward representative genomic research: the children's rare disease cohorts experience
CONCLUSION: We highlight underrepresentation of certain racial and ethnic populations in sequencing cohorts compared to the general hospital population. We propose a range of measures to address these disparities, to strive for equitable future precision medicine-based clinical care and for the benefit of the whole rare disease community.PMID:37621556 | PMC:PMC10445838 | DOI:10.1177/26330040231181406

The Future of AI in Ovarian Cancer Research: The Large Language Models Perspective
Cancer Control. 2023 Jan-Dec;30:10732748231197915. doi: 10.1177/10732748231197915.ABSTRACTConversational large language model (LLM)-based chatbots utilize neural networks to process natural language. By generating highly sophisticated outputs from contextual input text, they revolutionize the access to further learning, leading to the development of new skills and personalized interactions. Although they are not developed to provide healthcare, their potential to address biomedical issues is rather unexplored. Healthcare digitalization and documentation of electronic health records is now developing into a standard practic...

Inequities in referrals to a breast cancer risk assessment and prevention clinic: a mixed methods study
CONCLUSIONS: In this single-site evaluation, among individuals referred by primary care clinicians for specialized breast care, Black, publicly-insured patients, and those whose preferred language was not English were less likely to be referred for risk assessment. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. Interventions to standardize breast cancer risk assessment in primary care may improve equity.PMID:37626335 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02126-1

Non-face-to-face care management and service utilization in patients with diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: CMS implementation of reimbursement codes for NFFCCM, and subsequent utilization of that reimbursement by health systems, was associated with a shift in patient utilization from high-cost settings (inpatient and emergency department) to a lower-cost setting (outpatient office).PMID:37616148 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2023.89407
