Training faculty search committees to improve racial and ethnic diversity in hiring.
There is a critical need to hire faculty from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds at universities around the United States. Internal faculty consultants may help to address this need by training faculty members who serve on search committees about bias and inequities that affect the search process along with ways to avoid them. This case study seeks to guide internal faculty consultants in the United States who do this work and to address the paucity of academic attention to the process of finding workshops, securing support, and ultimately implementing such training. Specifically, this case study describes (a) ...

An architecture of open-source tools to combine textual information extraction, faceted search and information visualisation
This article presents our steps to integrate complex and partly unstructured medical data into a clinical research database with subsequent decision support. Our main application is an integrated faceted search tool, accompanied by the visualisation of results of automatic information extraction from textual documents. We describe the details of our technical architecture (open-source tools), to be replicated at other universities, research institutes, or hospitals. Our exemplary use cases are nephrology and mammography. The software was first developed in the nephrology domain and then adapted to the mammography use case....

A Hybrid Enhanced Scatter Search —Composite I-Distance Indicator (eSS-CIDI) Optimization Approach for Determining Weights Within Composite Indicators
The objective function is based on the relative contributions of indicators, while the problem constraints rely on the bootstrap Composite I-distance Indicator (CIDI) approach which is also proposed herein. The eSS-CIDI approach combines the exploration capability of eSS and the data-driven constraints devised from the bootstrap CIDI. This novel weighting approach was tested on two acknowledged composite indicators: theAcademic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and theNetworked Readiness Index (NRI). Results indicate that the composite indicators created using the eSS-CIDI weighting approach are more stable than the official ones.
