CROI 2023: Summary of Basic Science Research in HIV
Top Antivir Med. 2023 Jun 30;31(4):523-528.ABSTRACTThe 2023 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) represented the first fully in-person conference since the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic began. CROI continues as the premier conference in which delegates can appraise themselves of almost every facet of HIV/AIDS research as well as emerging and re-emerging pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox. The return to an in-person format is particularly important for early-stage investigators, who were faced with challenges of advancing their independent research careers...

High flow nasal cannula versus noninvasive ventilation in the treatment of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine if high-flow nasal cannula can be utilised when managing patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure, as opposed to noninvasive ventilation which is conventionally used in this regard. We found no statistically significant differences between the two modalities in the correction of arterial blood gases, intubation rates, mortality rates, and treatment switch. AbstractChronic obstructive pulmonary disease can lead to acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (AHRF), often treated using noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Emerging research suggests the potential ...

Orthopaedic surgery academic productivity - how do we measure up?
CONCLUSION: Our objective data provides a factual comparison and baseline assessment of one aspect of research productivity. It can challenge currently held perceptions of performance and can inform conversations about strategic development. We recommend this assessment to other international Colleges and Societies on regular basis. These accurate academic productivity metrics provide opportunity for developing and maintaining a culture of sustained, significant contribution to surgical research.PMID:37697488 | DOI:10.1177/10225536221135471

Promoting societal resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic: a multi-country analysis of public health strategies
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Public Health in developing proper strategies and utilizing digitals tools to counteract infodemic and spread relevant information. Healthcare workers should improve their communication skills to face future epidemics and be trusted by the population. Social media and digital platforms should be studied and used effectively in times of emergency.PMID:37695174 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14562

Impostor Phenomenon Among Family Medicine Residency Program Directors: A CERA Study
CONCLUSIONS: Most PD respondents did not report high levels of IP. Short duration of PD role, lack of programmatic support, and negative self-evaluations were correlated with higher levels of IP. Future research should examine interventions or resources to help those with IP thrive.PMID:37696026 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.439256

Craving Sweet Success: A Recipe for Developing a Global Health Education Consortium (or Any Consortium, for That Matter)
Pediatr Ann. 2023 Sep;52(9):e351-e356. doi: 10.3928/19382359-20230720-05. Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTMore than a decade ago, two faculty met at a conference. Each talked about how they were charged with leading global health education efforts at their institutions and longed to have an opportunity to share resources and learn from each other. After reaching out to a few other Midwestern colleagues and finding a date, the first Midwest Consortium of Global Child Health Educators meeting was held in Madison, WI. Now, after a dozen annual meetings, more than 30 articles, chapters, abstracts, and workshops, as well as the creatin...

Decolonizing Global Child Health Education for More Equitable and Culturally Safe Collaborations
Pediatr Ann. 2023 Sep;52(9):e344-e350. doi: 10.3928/19382359-20230720-07. Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTGlobal health (GH) as an academic field is fraught with both historical and present systemic injustice, including unilateral partnerships; power asymmetry in grant funding and research agenda setting; lack of acknowledgment of contributions from low- and middle-income country collaborators; and disadvantageous bias toward low- and middle-income country institutions. Reflecting on the legacies of colonialism and White supremacy is vital for training pediatricians to actively work to improve the health of all children worldwide,...

Quality improvement interventions to increase the uptake of magnesium sulphate in preterm deliveries for the prevention of cerebral palsy (PReCePT study): a cluster randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: PReCePT improved MgSO4 uptake in all maternity units. Enhanced support did not further improve uptake but may improve teamwork, and more accurately represented the time needed for implementation. Targeted enhanced support, sustainability of improvements and the possible indirect benefits of stronger teamwork associated with enhanced support should be explored further.PMID:37691262 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17651
