Opioid and benzodiazepine misuse in the United States: The impact of socio-demographic characteristics
CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: A large portion of US adults are misusing opioids, benzodiazepines, and both drugs. Specifically, bisexual individuals experience higher odds of opioid misuse, benzodiazepine misuse and misuse of both drugs compared with heterosexuals, while males are experiencing lower odds of benzodiazepine misuse compared with females. Individuals aged 26-49 experience the highest odds of opioid misuse, though misuse of both drugs was higher among the 18-25 age group. Findings underscore the use of targeted preventive measures to reduce misuse of these drugs among at-risk populations identified in...

Preliminary study on the E-liquid and aerosol on the neurobehavior of C. elegans
This study can provide new ideas for future studies on the neurotoxic effects and safety assessment of the E-cigarettes, and provide theoretical reference for the study on the injury mechanism of E-cigarettes.PMID:37690220 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.108180

Effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions among pregnant women: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Non-pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation are the most effective for pregnant women. The moderator analysis suggests that pregnant women of low socioeconomic status might benefit less from smoking cessation interventions than women of a high socioeconomic status. These women are usually heavier smokers that live in pro-smoking environments and could require more intensive and targeted interventions.PMID:37683574 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107854

Online Interest for Electronic Cigarettes Using Google Trends in the UK: A Correlation Analysis
CONCLUSION: Google Trends may correspond to population-based prevalence of electronic cigarette use. The changing trends coincide with changing policy decisions. Google Trends based prediction for online interest in electronic cigarettes requires further validation so should currently be used in conjunction with other traditional methods of data collections.PMID:37671780 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2247056

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in cancer: Limitations and prospects
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2023 Sep 4:166875. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2023.166875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have long been considered to solely mediate neurotransmission. However, their widespread distribution in the human body suggests a more diverse physiological role. Additionally, the expression of nAChRs is increased in certain cancers, such as lung cancer, and has been associated with cell proliferation, epithelial-to-mesenchymal cell transition, angiogenesis and apoptosis prevention. Several compounds that interact with these receptors have been identified as po...
