Thermal susceptibility and antibiotic synergism of methicillin-resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > biofilms
This study investigated the thermal susceptibility of MRSA biofilms to thermal shocks from 60 to 80 °C for 1-30 min as well as the effect of various antibiotics (most notably methicillin) on thermal mitigation. Pre- and post-shock exposure to three different classes of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, tobramycin, and methicillin) at concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 128 μg mL-1 were investigated. MRSA biofilms exhibited thermal susceptibility comparable to other common nosocomial pathogens, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, though with greater variability. Exposure to antibiotics of any class significantly decreased the degre...

An antimicrobial metabolite n- hexadecenoic acid from marine sponge-associated bacteria < em > Bacillus subtilis < /em > effectively inhibited biofilm forming multidrug-resistant < em > P. aeruginosa < /em >
Biofouling. 2023 May-Jul;39(5):502-515. doi: 10.1080/08927014.2023.2232722. Epub 2023 Jul 24.ABSTRACTEffective drug candidates to obstruct the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens have become a major concern. A potent antimicrobial producer was isolated from a marine sponge designated as MSI38 and was identified as Bacillus subtilis by 16SrDNA sequencing. The active antimicrobial fraction was purified, and the metabolite was identified as n-hexadecanoic acid by spectroscopic analysis. The fish-borne pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa FP012 was found to be multidrug-resistant and poses a risk of disease to food handlers ...

Single and multi-antibiotics removal via peroxymonosulfate activation using molybdenum disulfide (MoS < sub > 2 < /sub > ): Central composite design and degradation pathway
Chemosphere. 2023 Jul 18:139554. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe efficacy of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) for the degradation of metronidazole (MET), tetracycline (TET), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in single and multicomponent systems through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was investigated. Several characterization techniques, such as SEM, XRD, XPS, and EPR were performed to understand the removal mechanism of the three antibiotics in PMS/MoS2 system. In single component system with an initial antibiotic concentration of 10 mg L-1, >95% removal of MET, TET, and CIP were observed ...

Genomic analysis of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains carrying the mcr-1 gene recovered from pigs in Lima-Peru
Comp Immunol Microbiol Infect Dis. 2023 Jul 7;99:102019. doi: 10.1016/j.cimid.2023.102019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotic resistance is a current problem that significantly impacts overall health. The dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to urban areas primarily occurs through ARG-carrying bacteria present in the gut microbiota of animals raised in intensive farming settings, such as pig production. Hence, this study aimed to isolate and analyzed 87 Escherichia coli strains from pig fecal samples obtained from intensive farms in Lima Department. The isolates were subjected to Kirby-Bauer-Disk Diffu...

The rare < em > Salmonella enterica < /em > serovar Isangi: genomic characterization of the antimicrobial resistance, virulence potential and epidemiology of Brazilian strains in comparison to global isolates
Conclusion. The presence of S. Isangi strains from Brazil and different countries showing a close genomic correlation, antimicrobial resistance profiles to drugs used in human therapy and a large number of virulence determinants reinforced the need for stronger initiatives to monitor rare non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars such as S. Isangi in order to prevent its dissemination among human and non-human sources.PMID:37462464 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001736
