Prevalence of equine parvovirus-hepatitis in healthy broodmares in Ontario, Canada
This study investigated the prevalence of EqPV-H DNA in 170 healthy broodmares of various breeds located on 37 farms in southern Ontario, Canada. The occurrence of EqPV-H infection was determined by quantitative PCR for EqPV-H DNA in serum samples. The effects of age, breed, season, pregnancy status, and equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) vaccination history on EqPV-H status were also investigated. There was a prevalence of 15.9% (27/170) with viral loads of EqPV-H ranging from detectable to 2900 copies/mL. Statistical analysis showed that increasing age was a significant factor in the detection of EqPV-H DNA. Neither breed, sea...

Development of toxin-antitoxin self-destructive bacteria, aimed for salmonella vaccination
This study aimed to develop a novel vaccination strategy, which combines the effectiveness of live-attenuated and safety of inactivated vaccines by construction of inducible self-destructing bacteria utilizing toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems. Hok-Sok and CeaB-CeiB toxin-antitoxin systems were coupled with three induction systems aimed for activating cell killing upon lack of arabinose, anaerobic conditions or low concentration of metallic di-cations. The constructs were transformed into a pathogenic Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis strain and bacteria elimination was evaluated in vitro under specific activating conditi...

Development of Shigella conjugate vaccines targeting Shigella flexneri 2a and S. flexneri 3a using a simple platform-approach conjugation by squaric acid chemistry
Vaccine. 2023 Jul 1:S0264-410X(23)00738-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.052. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a need for vaccines effective against shigella infection in young children in resource-limited areas. Protective immunity against shigella infection targets the O-specific polysaccharide (OSP) component of lipopolysaccharide. Inducing immune responses to polysaccharides in young children can be problematic, but high level and durable responses can be induced by presenting polysaccharides conjugated to carrier proteins. An effective shigella vaccine will need to be multivalent, targeting the most common glob...
