Association between immunohistochemical markers and tumor progression following resection of spinal chordomas: a multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: These IHC variables with tree-based machine learning tools successfully demonstrate a high capacity to identify a patient's tumor progression pattern with an accuracy of 66%. Pancytokeratin, EMA, cytokeratin A1/A3, and S100 protein were the IHC drivers of a low tumor progression. This shows the power of machine learning algorithms in analyzing and predicting outcomes of rare conditions in a small sample size.PMID:37728388 | DOI:10.3171/2023.6.SPINE23348

The first steps towards advanced practice for radiation therapists
This article presents an overview of five oral presentations that highlight concrete examples of roles assigned to RTTs in these specific domains. The follow-up of patients has been assigned to RTT. Research and development have been recognized as activities in which RTT play a significant role. The establishment of RTT specializing in IGRT has been reported to facilitate decision-making and is essential in ensuring professional expertise. Lastly, there is a need to enhance RTT skills in adaptive RT to support the implementation of this technique. These roles described as advanced practice meet needs and require a specific...

Predictors of Pathologic Fracture and Local Recurrence Following Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy to 505 Non-Spine Bone Metastases
CONCLUSION: SBRT is an effective modality to treat NSBM with high rates of radiographic local control with an acceptable rate of PF. We identify predictors of both LF and PF that can serve to inform practice and trial design.PMID:37414253 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2023.109792

Patterns of Failure in High-Grade Soft Tissue Sarcomas of the Extremities and Trunk Wall After Pre- or Postoperative Radiation Therapy
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of LRs occurred within the PTV suggesting that LR is most likely not a consequence of inadequate target volume definition, but rather of radioresistant tumor biology. To further improve local tumor control, future research on the potential of dose escalation with normal tissue sparing, STS subtype-specific tumor biology, radiosensitivity, and surgical technique is indicated.PMID:37213480 | PMC:PMC10196229 | DOI:10.1016/j.adro.2023.101224

Radioembolization with Yttrium-90 Glass Microspheres as a First-Line Treatment for Unresectable Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma - A Prospective Feasibility Study
CONCLUSION: First-line treatment of ICC with radioembolization showed promising OS and minimal toxicity, especially in patients with solitary tumor. Radioembolization may be considered as the first line treatment of unresectable ICC.PMID:37210030 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvir.2023.05.026

Pembrolizumab-Associated Expansion of Radiation-Induced Morphea Responsive to Dupilumab: A Case Report
We report a patient who first received local radiation therapy to the thorax for lung adenocarcinoma that was complicated by RIM. The patient's morphea then progressed widely beyond the irradiated field in the setting of pembrolizumab therapy. Histopathology and imaging confirmed morphea extending beyond the irradiated field and with deeper muscular and fascial involvement. Pain and edema progressed through multiple lines of toxicity-directed therapy, but ultimately responded significantly to dupilumab. Response was confirmed clinically and radiographically, and the patient was able to resume ICI therapy. This case report ...

The United States Navy and Employees with Cancer: The Time for Change Is Now
This article discusses in detail (1) this policy and its ramifications to the Navy and Marine Corps and NNPP workforce and (2) recommendations, benefits, and impacts for the Navy and Marine Corps and NNPP to remove this policy and still maintain a robust radiation protection program.PMID:37071047 | DOI:10.1097/HP.0000000000001695

Risk factors for sacral fracture following en bloc chordoma resection
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with S1 or S2 partial sacral amputations, a combined anterior-posterior surgical approach, low superior S1 HU, and partial SI joint resection are at higher risk for postoperative sacral fracture following en bloc chordoma resection and should be considered for spinopelvic instrumentation at the index procedure.PMID:37060308 | DOI:10.3171/2023.3.SPINE221108
