Critical Care Transesophageal Echocardiography in Patients During The COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an extraordinary strain on healthcare systems across North America. Defining the optimal approach for managing a critically ill COVID-19 patient is rapidly changing. Goal-directed transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is frequently used by physicians caring for intubated critically-ill patients as a reliable imaging modality that is well-suited to answer questions at bedside. A multi-disciplinary group of experts in point-of-care echocardiography and TEE representing intensive care, critical care cardiology and emergency medicine from the United States and Canada, convened to review the av...

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric cardiac services in India
Conclusions : The current COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the delivery of pediatric cardiac care across India with two-third reduction in hospitalizations and cardiac surgeries. In an already resource-constrained environment, the impact of such a massive reduction in the number of surgeries could be significant over the coming years. These findings may prove useful in formulating strategy to manage subsequent waves of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Spatial patterning of occupational stress and its related factors in iranian critical care nurses using a hierarchical Bayesian technique
CONCLUSIONS: According to the findings, it is necessary to eliminate or reduce job stress and increase efficiency in Iranian nurses, encourage teamwork and collaboration as an essential element of a healthy workplace environment.PMID:35723144 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-210284

Referring Provider Opinions of Pediatric Cardiology Evaluations Performed by Nurse Practitioners
AbstractIn the setting of physician shortages, nurse practitioner (NP) roles have evolved, with increasing independence across most healthcare settings. We sought to characterize referring clinician perceptions of NP-performed outpatient pediatric cardiology consultations. We electronically distributed to pediatric and family medicine physicians and NPs in Arkansas our 11-item survey assessing the acceptability of pediatric cardiology consultations being completed by an NP under varying circumstances. Circumstances included seven common referral indications, and the scale offered five answer choices ranging from “definit...

Critical Care in Resource-Limited Settings
Critical care and cardiovascular care share many facets. Critical care is defined by life-threatening conditions, which require close evaluation, monitoring, and treatment by appropriately trained health professionals. Cardiovascular care bears these same requirements. This issue aims to highlight key areas of critical care in resource-limited settings that are affected by or have an impact on cardiovascular care. With the global epidemiological transition positioning cardiovascular disease as the leading killer worldwide [1], the need for specialty and critical care and knowledge of its diagnosis and management are only increasing.

A Survey on Critical Care Resources and Practices in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Conclusions In a convenience sample of 13 ICU from LMIC, specialty-trained staff and standardized processes of care such as checklists are frequently lacking. ICU needs-assessment evaluations should be expanded in LMIC as a global priority, with the goal of creating and evaluating context-appropriate checklists for ICU best practices.

6. Oral care competency and practices among critical care nurses for mechanically ventilated patients
Conclusions The survey provided useful information on the oral care knowledge and practices of nurses caring for Mechanically Ventilated Patients. Almost all the nurses perceived oral care to be a high priority. Very low number of nurses are using the toothbrush with 2% Chlorhexidine Solution every 2–4h, this figure must be studied for further action. The majority of nurses had some formal training in oral care, but would appreciate an opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills.

The Prevention of Critical Care Complications in Coronary Intensive Care Unit: Protocols, Bundles, and Insights from Intensive Care Studies
Publication date: Available online 1 July 2016 Source:Canadian Journal of Cardiology Author(s): Sean van Diepen, Wendy I. Sligl, Jeffrey B. Washam, Ian C. Gilchrist, Rakesh C. Arora, Jason N. Katz Over the last half century coronary care units have expanded from specialized ischemia arrhythmia monitoring units into intensive care units for acute ill and medically complex patients with a primary cardiac diagnosis. Patients admitted to contemporary coronary intensive care units (CICUs) are at risk for common and preventable critical care complications, yet many CICUs have not adopted standard-of-care prevention proto...

The Swan Ganz catheter remains a critically important component of monitoring in cardiovascular critical care
Publication date: Available online 2 November 2016 Source:Canadian Journal of Cardiology Author(s): Matthew Lee, Gerard F. Curley, Mary Mustard, C David Mazer Few inventions in modern medicine have generated as passionate and extended a debate as the pulmonary artery catheter (PAC). Since its introduction in 1970, the PAC remains an indispensible monitor in cardiovascular critical care. Despite attempts to develop less-invasive alternatives, the PAC remains unequaled as a single monitoring device capable of measuring physiological derangement in most components of the circulation, in the awake or sedated patient, with rea...

Cardiac Critical Care: The Evolution of a Novel Subspecialty
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2022 Jun 3;18(3):24-29. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1092. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDriven by evolving patient demographics and disease burdens over the past several decades, the demands placed on the cardiac intensive care unit have steadily increased. Originally born out of the need for post-infarction arrhythmia monitoring, the modern cardiac intensive care space is now encountering progressively more complex patients with multisystem organ failure and, increasingly, complex mechanical circulatory support. This complexity has fueled a demand for specifically trained cardiac intensivists, and many ...
