Digital Storytelling: Families' Search for Meaning after Child Death.
Authors: Rolbiecki AJ, Washington K, Bitsicas K Abstract Bereaved families that collectively make meaning of their grief experiences often function better than those that do not, yet most social work bereavement interventions target individuals rather than family units. In this article, authors describe an innovative social work intervention that employs digital storytelling. This is a narrative technique that combines photography, music, and spoken word to help families bereaved by child death make meaning of their loss and envision a future without their deceased child. Pure abscopal effect of radiotherapy in a salivary gland carcinoma: Case report, literature review, and a search for new approaches.
We report the case of an 84-year-old woman with poorly differentiated non-small cell carcinoma of the right parotid who presented with headache, was found to have a primary right parotid gland cancer as well as metastatic disease, and underwent palliative radiotherapy to the primary site. The patient received no chemotherapy or immunotherapy, but both the primary site and several non-irradiated foci in the lungs regressed or completely resolved. The patient remained free of disease for about one year before progression. The case is a rare instance of abscopal regression of metastatic disease in the absence of pharmacologic...

Does the carer support needs assessment tool cover the established support needs of carers of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? A systematic literature search and narrative review.
CONCLUSION: Evidence suggests that carers of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease would benefit from identification and response to their support needs by healthcare professionals but to enable this, the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool requires an additional question. Future planned work will explore this with carers of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. PMID: 32669040 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Identification and selection of jobs in clinical geropsychology: A survey to inform career mentoring, job search, and helpful resources.
This survey aimed to understand job selection decisions in clinical geropsychology and what information and resources support such decision making. Enhancing mentorship discussions to focus on early career job identification may promote placement satisfaction and match alongside growth and success of the geriatric mental health workforce. This cross-sectional observational study analyzed data from 97 respondents, including geropsychology trainees (n = 42) and professional geropsychologists (n = 55), who completed an online survey. Trainees endorsed a variety of ideal job characteristics in geropsychology; particularly sett...

Experiences of older adults accessing specialized health care services in rural and remote areas: a qualitative systematic review
CONCLUSION: We believe that the distance to travel to obtain specialized services, as well as living in an area without specialized services, impacted this population's experience of obtaining specialized health care as well as their health. The spectrum of findings for our synthesized finding suggests that this was the case for some people, but not all. We speculate that people who have chosen to live outside an urban area or have lived in a rural area for a prolonged period come to accept their access to health care, including the distance to travel for health care and their potential for this to impact their health. The...

Early palliative interventions for improving outcomes in people with a primary malignant brain tumour and their carers
CONCLUSIONS: Currently there is a lack of research focusing on the introduction of early palliative interventions specifically for people with primary brain tumours, either as co-ordinated specialist palliative care approaches or interventions focusing on a specific aspect of palliation. Future research should address the methodological shortcomings described in early palliative intervention studies in other cancers and chronic conditions. In particular, the specific population under investigation, the timing and the setting of the intervention should be clearly described and the standardised palliative care-specific compo...

Cannabis-based medicines and medical cannabis for adults with cancer pain
CONCLUSIONS: There is moderate-certainty evidence that oromucosal nabiximols and THC are ineffective in relieving moderate-to-severe opioid-refractory cancer pain. There is low-certainty evidence that nabilone is ineffective in reducing pain associated with (radio-) chemotherapy in people with head and neck cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. There is low-certainty evidence that a single dose of synthetic THC analogues is not superior to a single low-dose morphine equivalent in reducing moderate-to-severe cancer pain. There is low-certainty evidence that CBD does not add value to specialist palliative care alone in the ...

UnitedHealth ' s Optum Division Settles Case Alleging it Enrolled Non-Terminally Ill Patients in Hospice, Thus Risking Their Deaths Due to Treatable Illnesses
Discussion The problem of fraudulant enrollment of non-terminal patients in hospice continues, despite our efforts over five years to make the problem more public.   The latest case involved a very big, very wealthy for-profit health care corporation which has had its share of troubles in the past .   Yet the latest case is as anechoic as earlier ones, including smaller cases this year. These enrollments may be motivated by the desire for more money, but they put patients at risk.   Nonetheless, such abuses by hospices get little press coverage, seemingly are ignored by health care regulators and law enf...

Hospital at home: home-based end-of-life care
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence included in this review supports the use of home-based end-of-life care programmes for increasing the number of people who will die at home. Research that assesses the impact of home-based end-of-life care on caregivers and admissions to hospital would be a useful addition to the evidence base, and might inform the delivery of these services.PMID:33721912 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD009231.pub3
