The Effect of Geometric Graft Modification on Arteriovenous Graft Patency in Haemodialysis Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSION: The meta-analysis showed that a prosthetic cuff design significantly improves AVG patency, while a venous cuff does not. Although the heterogeneity and low number of available studies limit the strength of the results, this review shows the potential of grafts with geometric modification to the graft-vein anastomosis and should stimulate further clinical and fundamental research on improving graft geometry to improve graft patency. Efficacy and safety of secondary procedures for maintaining arteriovenous hemodialysis access patency: protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis
DiscussionThere are a number of treatment modalities for the management of failing AV access. However, most modalities have only been directly compared with plain old balloon angioplasty, and currently synthesized evidence focuses on individual pairwise comparisons. In light of the lack of comprehensively synthesized evidence and clinical equipoise, our study intends to synthesize currently available evidence though it is unclear which treatment modality is most effective.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO ID CRD42020148224

Functional health literacy in renal replacement therapy: an integrative review
Conclusion The twelve instruments to measure functional health literacy in patients under renal replacement therapy show satisfactory psychometric properties, but only one is validated to be used in Brazil. The insufficient use of tools to evaluate literacy in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis was noteworthy.

Outbreaks of healthcare-associated infections linked to water-containing hospital equipment: a literature review
ConclusionsThe water reservoirs in water-containing medical devices can be a source of microbial growth and transmissions to patients, despite the semi-closed water circuit. Proper handling and proper cleaning and disinfection can help to reduce the microbial burden and, consequently, transmission to patients. However, these devices are often difficult to clean and disinfect because they cannot be adequately opened or disassembled, and the manufacturer ’s cleaning guidelines are often not feasible to execute. The development of equipment without water or fluid containers should be stimulated. Precise cleaning and disinfe...

Burden and causes of hospital admissions and readmissions in patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis: a nationwide study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study illustrates a high burden of hospitalization in patients on dialysis, suggests the risk of longer hospitalizations for patients on PD, and identifies cardiovascular events and infections as complications that may benefit from closer post-discharge monitoring.PMID:33987824 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-021-01023-z

Effect of music intervention during hemodialysis: a comprehensive meta-analysis
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2021 May;25(10):3822-3834. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202105_25950.ABSTRACTAggravating disease and the accompanying increase in the frequency of hemodialysis interventions worsen the quality of life of patients leading to poor physical and psychological outcomes. Music-based interventions have been suggested to improve both the physical and psychological prognoses for patients undergoing hemodialysis. Two meta-analyses on the impact of music-based interventions on anxiety in patients undergoing hemodialysis failed to evaluate the impact of these interventions on other physiological outcomes. Therefore,...

Glucocorticoid with cyclophosphamide for oral paraquat poisoning
CONCLUSIONS: Low-certainly evidence suggests that glucocorticoids with cyclophosphamide in addition to standard care may slightly reduce mortality in hospitalised people with oral paraquat poisoning. However, we have limited confidence in this finding because of substantial heterogeneity and concerns about imprecision. Glucocorticoids with cyclophosphamide in addition to standard care may have little or no effect on mortality at three months after hospital discharge. We are uncertain whether glucocorticoid with cyclophosphamide puts patients at an increased risk of infection due to the limited evidence available for this o...

The clinical effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine uremic clearance granule combined with high-flux hemodialysis in the treatment of uremic pruritus: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis
Conclusion: This study will give a positive conclusion on the efficacy and safety of uremic clearance granule in the treatment of uremic pruritus, and the research results will be published in professional journals in the form of academic papers, thus benefiting more patients. Ethics and dissemination: This study belongs to meta-analysis and all data comes from academic papers published publicly in formal academic journals, so there are no ethical issues involved in this study and no ethical review or approval is required. Medical adjuvant treatment to increase patency of arteriovenous fistulae and grafts
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analyses of three studies for ticlopidine (an antiplatelet treatment), which all used the same dose of treatment but with a short follow-up of only one month, suggest ticlopidine may have a beneficial effect as an adjuvant treatment to increase the patency of AVFs and AVGs in the short term. There was insufficient evidence to determine if there was a difference in graft patency between placebo and other treatments such as aspirin, fish oil, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, dipyridamole plus aspirin, warfarin, sulphinpyrazone and GTN patch. The certainty of the evidence was low to moderate due to short follo...
