Pediatric screening tools for malnutrition: an update
We present recent studies about newly developed or adjusted tools, the applicability of nutritional screening tools in specific populations, and how to implement screening in the overall process of improving nutritional care in the pediatric hospital setting. Summary Three new screening tools have been developed for use on admission to hospital: two for the mixed pediatric hospitalized population and one for infants. A simple weekly rescreening tool to identify hospital-acquired nutritional deterioration was developed for use in children with prolonged hospital stay. Different from most previous studies that only assess...

Marijuana, e-cigarette, and tobacco product use in young adults who underwent pediatric bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric MBS demonstrates promise in lowering risks for adult chronic disease, which may be diminished by age-typical health risk behaviors. Developmentally salient and holistic pediatric postoperative care guidelines are needed.PMID:36567232 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2022.11.008

Pediatric and adolescent obesity: Management, options for surgery, and outcomes
Abstract: The past four decades have witnessed a marked rise in the number of children and adolescents with obesity. Severe obesity has also become increasingly prevalent. More young patients who have obesity are being referred for weight management and weight loss surgery, thus posing new challenges to both the medical personnel who care for them as well as the institutions in which that care is provided. This manuscript is generated from the material presented at the Education Day symposium entitled “Surgical Care of the Obese Child” held at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Pediatric Surgical Association in Pa...

Fear-based Medicine: Using Scare Tactics in the Clinical Encounter
By NAMRATHA KANDULA, MD and MATTHEW WYNIA, MD How often do doctors say something like this to patients?  “It’s really important for you to do this; if you don’t you might … have a stroke, go blind, lose a leg, die or (insert a scary outcome here).”  There are no solid data to answer this question, though patients report that conversations containing such direct threats are common in clinical encounters. The more important question is, do scare tactics work? Fear-based messages in clinical encounters Health communication experts call these types of messages fear-based appeals. Fear appeals create an emotional r...

Pediatric obesity: Causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment.
Authors: Xu S, Xue Y Abstract Pediatric or childhood obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disorder among children and adolescents worldwide. Approximately 43 million individuals are obese, 21-24% children and adolescents are overweight, and 16-18% of individuals have abdominal obesity. The prevalence of obesity is highest among specific ethnic groups. Obesity increases the risk of heart diseases in children and adults. Childhood obesity predisposes the individual to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, liver and kidney diseases and causes reproductive dysfunction in adults. Obe...

Health Care Providers Perceptions of Nutrition Support in Pediatric Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Patients
One of the most common side effects of medical treatment for patients with an oncologic diagnosis is malnutrition. There is limited research that broadly assesses the perceptions of health care providers (HCPs) regarding nutrition support in the pediatric population. The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of nutrition support among pediatric oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplant HCPs. The study used a cross-sectional descriptive design using a 31-item survey. Results of the survey indicated that nurses were more likely to initiate conversations about nutrition support during the first month of ...

How Could The 21st Century Cures Act And The Joint Commission Improve Eating Disorder Care?
Approximately 30 million individuals have experienced a diagnosable eating disorder at some point in their life. People with an eating disorder are more likely to have comorbid physical and psychological conditions, higher annual health care costs, and experience reduced quality of life. Moreover, eating disorders are among the deadliest of psychological conditions, with anorexia nervosa in particular having an especially high mortality rate. While the burden is significant, there has long been a lack of access to eating disorder prevention, identification, and intervention services. Parity of behavioral health care with g...

Nutrition and hydration in palliative care.
Abstract Anorexia, weight loss and muscle wasting commonly affect people approaching the end of life. It is critical that clinicians caring for people with advanced illness and progressive frailty can assess the nutritional and hydration needs of these people, engage them in shared decision making and support them to plan ahead regarding their nutritional care preferences as their health deteriorates. Care bundles for improving outcomes in patients with COVID-19  or related conditions in intensive care - a rapid scoping review.
CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review has identified 21 studies on care bundle use in critically ill patients in ICU with COVID-19, ARDS, viral influenza or pneumonia and severe respiratory failure. The data for patients with COVID-19 specifically are limited, derived mainly from observational quality improvement or clinical experiential accounts. Research is required, urgently, to further assess care bundle use and optimal components of these bundles in this patient cohort. The care bundles described were also varied, with guidance on ventilator settings described in 10 care bundles, while chest X-ray was part mentioned in one...
