Validated HPLC-UV method for amphotericin B quantification in a critical patient receiving AmBisome and treated with extracorporeal replacement therapies
Biomed Chromatogr. 2023 Sep 20:e5749. doi: 10.1002/bmc.5749. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmphotericin B (AMB) is a polyene macrolide antifungal agent used for treating invasive fungal infections. Liposomal AMB is a lipid dosage form, available as AmBisome, which reduces the toxicity of the drug. A simple HPLC-UV method was developed for the determination of AMB in plasma to study its pharmacokinetic profile in a critical patient receiving AmBisome and treated with extracorporeal replacement therapies. Sample preparation was performed using plasma deproteinization and drug release from liposome by the addition of acetonit...

Rapidly Synthesized Single-Ion Conductive Hydrogel Electrolyte for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Zinc-ion Batteries
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 20:e202312020. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSingle-ion conductive electrolytes can largely eliminate electrode polarization, reduce the proportion of anion migration and inhibit side reactions in batteries. However, they usually suffer from insufficient ion conductivity due to the strong interaction between cations and cationic receptors. Here we report an ultrafast light-responsive covalent organic frameworks (COF) with sulfonic acid groups modification as the acrylamide polymerization initiator. Benefiting from the reduced electrostatic interaction between Zn...

The Pathogenesis of COVID-19-Related Taste Disorder and Treatments
J Dent Res. 2023 Sep 20:220345231182926. doi: 10.1177/00220345231182926. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19, mainly manifested as acute respiratory distress syndrome, has afflicted millions of people worldwide since 2019. Taste dysfunction is a common early-stage symptom of COVID-19 infection that burdens patients for weeks or even permanently in some cases. Owing to its subjectivity and complexity, the mechanism of taste disorder is poorly studied. Previous studies have reported that the COVID-19 entry receptors are highly expressed in taste buds, thereby intensifying the cytocidal effect. Taste receptor cells are vul...

Prevalence of Fascioliasis in Slaughtered Cattle in A ğrı Province
CONCLUSION: In this study conducted on cattle in the Ağrı region, F. hepatica was found to be significantly common. The data obtained show that in order to prevent economic losses in animal husbandry, which is an important source of livelihood of the local people, effective prevention and control programs should be planned and implemented, and both sheep and cattle breeders should be made aware of the prevention of this infection.PMID:37724364 | DOI:10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.39306

Gene of the month: GATA3
J Clin Pathol. 2023 Sep 19:jcp-2023-209017. doi: 10.1136/jcp-2023-209017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) is a zinc-finger pioneer transcription factor involved in diverse processes. GATA3 regulates gene expression through binding nucleosomal DNA and facilitating chromatin remodelling. Post-translational modifications modulate its activity. During development, GATA3 plays a key role in cell differentiation. Mutations in GATA3 are linked to breast and bladder cancer. GATA3 expression is a feature of the luminal subtype of bladder cancer and has implications for immune status and therapeutic resp...

Impacts of Some Trace Metals in Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus,  1758) and Tor soro (Valenciennes, 1842) on Human Health
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03852-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough fish are rich sources of various trace metals in their bodies, when these metals exceed health safety limits, it becomes a global concern. Fish exposed to trace metal pollution in their aquatic ecosystems can lead to bioaccumulation and transfer to consumers. Monitoring trace metal contamination of fish food is crucial because they can reach humans through the aquatic food chain, resulting in health problems. Therefore, a first attempt was made for the analysis of trace metals in two cyprinid fish species, namely Cypri...

Imbalance of Plasma Copper and Zinc Levels and the Association Between the Cu/Zn Ratio and Lipid Peroxidation in Algerian Bipolar Patients
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03858-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrace elements, through their interaction with biomolecules, can play an important role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and protect against oxidative stress effects. The purpose of this study is to examine plasma concentration levels of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) of Algerian patients, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and to compare these levels with those of healthy controls. The Cu/Zn ratio was calculated to explore a possible correlation between these elements and lipid peroxidation in the study groups. A total of 3...
