Performance comparison of photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy with visible-light-activated organic dyes: Rose bengal, crystal violet, methylene blue, and toluidine blue O
This study evaluated the photobiocidal performance of four widely distributed visible-light-activated (VLA) dyes against two bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli) and two bacteriophages (phages MS2 and phi 6): rose bengal (RB), crystal violet, methylene blue, and toluidine blue O (TBO). The photobiocidal performance of each dye depended on the relationship between the type of dye and microorganism. Gram-negative E. coli and the non-enveloped structure of phage MS2 showed more resistance to the photobiocidal reaction than Gram-positive S. epidermidis and the enveloped structure of phage phi 6. RB had th...

Multifunctional nanoadjuvant-driven microenvironment modulation for enhanced photothermal immunotherapy in breast cancer
In this study, we developed a multifunctional nanoadjuvant, termed GITFe/Z-HA, by modified a metal-organic backbone Fe/ZIF-8 with hyaluronic acid (HA) targeting. The nanocarriers were loaded with glucose oxidase (Gox), neoindocyanine green (IR820) and tilazamine (TPZ). This design aimed to achieve a cascade reaction within tumor cells, mediated by Gox, Fe3+, and IR820, which consumes intrinsic glucose and oxygen, leading to an elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This cascade reaction creates a hypoxic environment conducive for TPZ to exert its therapeutic action. Consequently, the combination of photother...

Diagnosis and management of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease
Expert Rev Respir Med. 2023 Aug 14. doi: 10.1080/17476348.2023.2247989. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is an orphan disease and uncommon etiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) characterized by substantial small pulmonary vein and capillary involvement.AREAS COVERED: PVOD, also known as 'PAH with features of venous/capillary involvement' in the current ESC/ERS classification.EXPERT OPINION: In recent years, particular risk factors for PVOD have been recognized, including genetic susceptibilities and environmental factors (such as exposure to occupational organi...

Multifunctional Covalent Organic Framework-Based Microneedle Patch for Melanoma Treatment
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Jul 20. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00488. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMelanoma is resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Therefore, it is essential to develop a targeted, low-toxic, and minimally invasive treatment. Here, DTIC/ICG-Fe3O4@TpBD BSP/HA microneedles (MNs) were designed and fabricated, which can enhance targeting to melanoma and perform photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy simultaneously to synergistically exert anticancer effects. The system consisted of magnetic nanoparticles (DTIC/ICG-Fe3O4@TpBD), dissoluble matrix (Bletilla polysaccharide (BSP)/hyaluronic aci...

Research progress on carbon materials in tumor photothermal therapy
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Jun 28;165:115070. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115070. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAt present, cancer remains one of the leading causes of human death worldwide, and surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still the main methods of cancer treatment. However, these treatments have their drawbacks. Surgical treatment often struggles with the complete removal of tumor tissue, leading to a high risk of cancer recurrence. Additionally, chemotherapy drugs have a significant impact on overall health and can easily result in drug resistance. The high risk and mortality of cancer and other reasons prom...

Synthesis and characterization of biological macromolecules double emulsion based on carboxymethylcellulose/gelatin hydrogel incorporated with ZIF-8 as metal organic frameworks for sustained anti-cancer drug release
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jun 1:125168. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125168. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe field of nanotechnology has introduced novel prospects for drug delivery systems, which have the potential to supplant conventional chemotherapy with reduced adverse effects. Despite being a promising porous material, ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, tends to agglomerate in water, which limits its applicability. In order to resolve this problem, we added ZIF-8 to hydrogels consisting of gelatin and carboxymethylcellulose. This improved their mechanical strength and stability while avoiding aggregation. We utilize...

Antischistosomal effects of green and chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles: in vitro and in vivo murine model
This study showed that mice treated with G-AgNPs plus PZQ significantly has the highest percentage of reduction in granuloma size and count (64.59%, 70.14%, respectively). Both G-AgNPs plus PZQ-treated & C-AgNPs plus PZQ treated groups showed the highest similar values of reduction percentage of total ova count in tissues (98.90% & 98.62%, respectively). Concerning SEM, G-AgNPs-treated worms showed more variability in ultrastructural alterations than G-AgNPs plus PZQ-treated one, besides, worms treated with C-AgNPs plus PZQ exhibited the maximum level of contractions or (shrinkage) as a major impact.PMID:37236335 |...
