Electrolyte imbalance causes suppression of NK and T cell effector function in malignant ascites
CONCLUSION: Our data suggest a novel electrolyte-based mechanism of immunosuppression in malignant ascites of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. We show for the first time that the immunosuppression of NK cytotoxicity in coculture assays is correlated to patient poor survival. Comparison of effectiveness and safety of sodium polystyrene sulfonate and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate for treatment of hyperkalemia in hospitalized patients
CONCLUSION: One of the largest comparisons of SPS and SZC conducted to date, this study demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of both agents. While a statistically greater reduction in serum potassium was observed with use of SPS, there was significant dosing variability among agents that limited the ability to directly compare specific doses. Further investigation is needed to determine the optimal dose of each agent for acute hyperkalemia management. Electrolytes Play a Role in Detecting Cisplatin-Induced Kidney Complications and May Even Prevent Them-Retrospective Analysis
Conclusions: We report that an average of 15% of patients with electrolyte abnormalities develop renal toxicity and reduced function. Moreover, electrolytes may serve as an early indicator for renal damage as part of chemotherapy complication. This indication represents 15% of renal toxicity cases. Changes in electrolyte levels have been reported with cisplatin. Specifically, it has been linked to hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia and hypokalemia.
